Ksyrium technical?

I am instaliing a cassette on my 1st set of Ksyriums and I noticed a metal ring and rubber ring already on the hub. I am installing a 10 speed Ultegra cassette.

Do the metal ring and rubber ring stay on?

Thanks.

how thick is the metal ring?

I think English Muffin meant is the metal ring only half a millimeter thick or so? If it it’s about half a mil thick and it’s front face is maybe 1/8" then it’s a spacer for running a shimano 10spd cassette. If you’r running 10spd leave it on, put it on before the cassette. If you are running 9spd then take it off but hold on to it for later.

You have to be careful with this. The Ksyrium freewheel is designed to support both Campagnolo and Shimano cassettes, as was told me.

I use a 8 speed shimano cassette and have to add extra spacer to fill up the total width. I don’t know whether 9 and 10 speed Shimano cassettes are wider than 8-speed shimano’s.

So, the metal ring and rubber are there to adjust your setup depending on the cassette (brand and size ?) you are using I suppose.

Actually, this is an M10 freehub, so it will accept only Shimano or Mavic (which work with campy or shimano) cassettes. Leave the spacer on for 9sp, remove for 10 sp.

Enjoy the wheels, they are still my favorite.

negative on taking the spacer out for 10spd. It stays in. If you take the spacer out and tighten the cassette lock nut you’ll notice that the cassette will still wobble.

Leave the spacer in for 10speed and remove it for 9 speed. The rubber ring just holds the thing there. Don’t loose it and make sure that the shop gives you the spoke wrench and wheel magnet as they come with the wheels as well (SL models).

According to the Mavic website:

Compatibility with 9 or 10 speed ED derailleurs:
2 solutions:

  • Use a Mavic® M10 wheel, remove the positioning wedge delivered with the wheel in place on the free wheel body, then mount a Mavic® M10 cassette, with black spacers for 10 speed, and yellow spacers for 9 speed.
  • Use a Mavic® ED10 wheel and mount a ED10 cassette or ED9 cassette.

Of course, when they refer to ED derailleurs, they are talking Campy. So with Shimano 10 you leave the spacer on? There is no mention of Shimano 10 on the web page.
