Just put a set of Mavic Kysrium SSC SLs on last weekend. Last night while doing hill repeats, I noticed a clicking sound coming from the front wheel. It’s at least once or twice per revolution. Anyone know what this might be? Do the bearings need a little tightening?
My guess is that it’s either the valve stem tapping against the rim or your front skewer is not tight enough and there is a touch of play in the wheel.
This happened to me last week and it drove me crazy trying to figure out what it was. It turned out that the sticker came off the rim a bit and was hitting the brake pads.
Thanks Bob - I did retighten the skewer on the ride, but that didn’t help. I’ll try tightening the valve stem nut or shimming around it to see if that’s the cause.
I’ve noticed that the skewers on my Ksyriums (SSC Sl and ES’) need to be exceptionally tight, so though you tightened them, you might want to try harder. Again, just a guess.
My true money would be on the valve stem tapping or something hitting the fork or your computer sensor.
The pin that is used internally to secure the seam in the rim can come loose. It happened to a friend and drove him nuts for a long time. The LBS hit the sidewall of the rim with a small punch and it secured the pin back in place. The LBS guy said it wasn’t the first time they had seen it with the SLs.
It only does it when I’m on the bike…if I get off and just spin the wheel it doesn’t make the click sound. If it was the pin, wouldn’t it probably do it even when just spinning the wheel?
The more I read, the more I think it is most likely the valve stem tapping at the high and low point of the wheel revolution. By spinning the wheel alone, there is no ride weight/pressure on the wheel, which causes the valve clicking.
