Krav Maga in NYC

Madduck’s thread reminded me that I’ve been wanting to study Krav Maga forever (my background is in JKD). Does anyone know of any good schools in Manhattan? Google found three places for me: 1) Krav Maga Inc. in Midtown West, which seems to be the best option so far in terms of class offerings and schedule; 2) some place on the East side that has limited classes (not an option), and I think John Jay has classes as well.

Figured I’d check here to see if anyone has other recommendations or has reviews of any of the schools above.

Thanks everyone!

Can’t help you with your request, but on a side note regarding Krav Maga—if you watch the History Channel’s “Human Weapon”, this upcoming Friday’s episode is about this discipline…looking forward to it as I understand it is the badass of all the martial arts…

Sorry the only school I have had any contact with is the LA one. My boss took seminars from the head US instructor then would come back and use me to demonstrate to the classes. Lots of fun LOL. As far as the art goes, excellent stuff, all you need and nothing you don’t. We worked some of the simpler stuff into our womens self defense class, easy to learn and as effective as hell.

The big issue right now with Krav Magra is that it got so successful so fast that it expanded too quickly. A regular martial arts instructor can take a week or two cert course and be a “Krav Magra Instructor” so you really need to be careful with who you use for instruction.

I’ll definitely be mindful of that. Here are the instructor profiles at the school I’ll probably check out:

**Rhon Mizrachi**

Master Instructor Rhon Mizrachi, Dan 5, has dedicated his life to the art of Krav Maga. He has been training for 37 years, over 25 of which have been spent as an instructor. He is the highest ranking practitioner of Krav Maga residing in the United States who is not self-ranked. He is a founding member of Krav Maga International-Kapap. In 2003, Rhon was certified as “Master Instructor” by Grandmaster Haim Zut. Rhon is the only Krav Maga instructor in the United States who has been given this title. Rhon is an eighth-generation Israeli and was born in Hadera and raised on Kibbutz Gan Shmu’el. He began his training at the age of seven under the instruction of Haim Zut and Imi Lichtenfeld. In November 1981, Rhon began his military service, volunteering for the paratrooper brigade, Hativat Tzanchanim, where he attained the rank of Sergeant. He entered Lebanon in early June, 1982, taking part in the initial assault of the First War against Lebanon. He spent most of his military service inside Lebanon or patrolling the Israeli border with Syria. During the war, he continued his Krav Maga training, and towards the end of his military career he was recruited to teach Krav Maga to his unit. When his military service ended in 1984, he returned home with a deeper commitment to continuing his training with Haim Zut, determined to instill in other people the sense of right and responsibility to defend oneself, one’s family, and one’s homeland. It is because of these beliefs that Rhon not only continues to teach Krav Maga, but also continues to train Instructors, ensuring that Krav Maga taught outside of Israel will remain at the highest level.

I’d pick one of the Israelis for sure. Rhon Mizrachi would be my first pick if you get along with him. I worked with some folks in the I.D.F. who were properly trained when I was in Israel. I would be concerned about learning a “diluted” style from someone not trained properly.
