Kona -- Why So Many DNFs?

Apologies if this has been covered in one of the other threads, but why so many DNFs this year? The pro men who DNF’d include Llanos, Al-Sultan, Bozzone, Butterfield, Jacobs, Dellow, Docherty, Tollakson, Cunningham, Cunnama, and Starky. Seems like a lot.

When you are out of the race it is the smart thing to do. No real point in finishing, unless that was some sort of goal pre race…

I think some of those athletes you mention did finish but well back of their expected time/place.

Guess some had an off day perhaps and just gutted it out to the finish?

All of the names I listed show up as DNFs on the results page at http://www.ironman.com/triathlon/events/americas/ironman/world-championship/results.aspx#axzz3FwyefXwG

The KPR encourages this. You need some points in October to be in a strong position to qualify for next year. Rather than crawl to the finish in Kona for zero points, pull out and target another late-season IM.

Some folks ride the wind, some folks hide the wind, and some can’t abide the wind.

Lots of DNF’s for sure. Looked like brutal conditions to me. Hats off to everyone who finished, and especially those who ran strongly after struggling on the bike. Carfrae must have alien DNA…I told her story to 20 people already.

Not sure if it’s what you’re saying. I think it may not be. But did Carfrae really struggle on the bike? She’s just a slower cyclist.

How do you not struggle on the bike in those winds? Everyone had a choice: Lay it out there and possibly blow up on the run, or DNF. Regardless, to take back over 13 minutes after a long, windy bike is phenomenal.

Once the chance of a pay day is over, there is no reason for these guys to finish. Once the pay day is gone, they are already thinking and planning about how to get to the NEXT finish line in the money.

These guys all have a limited life span in the sport. The human body only has so many miles in it. When they depend on that body for their compensation they have to conserve.

I am shocked that there are not MORE DNF’s at the top heavy prize purse races.

My point is just would she necessarily be so much closer with different wind conditions. Ryf pushed pretty hard. Not saying she did or did not struggle, but that it might not have made such a difference in the gap off the bike.

I was told by an age group finisher that the wind was as bad as anyone could remember in recent memory.

Ok. I agree. Ryf is an awesome biker and in good conditions she might really separate from the field. She took 9 minutes out of Carfrae on the bike alone.

I should have said over 14 minutes above, I think. Can’t rely on my aging memory…

I think it was 14:33 but not sure. It was pretty incredible.

Edit: Actually that’s wrong… that was the gap in T2, but I think Mirinda was behind after the swim as well. Not sure actually.

Well, Roger Little biked over 8 hours, which is evidence enough for me that conditions were very rough. That guy is a stud, normally…

Those guys are all lottery slot winners, right?

Llanos spiked a fever two days before the race.

14 MPRO DNF and only 4 WPRO DNF? Did I read that right?

I always wonder about that " The human body only has so many miles in it" idea. I don’t agree with it.

I should have clarified. The body only has “so many miles WHILE IN PEAK YEARS”

It is true across all sports and all disciplines. No one lasts forever. You must cut hay while the grass is still growing.
