Just saw a FB post from a friend, she got one of the slots that were lotteried. Anybody else?

I got one. After having no luck in the lottery for Norseman and Swissman 2 years in a row I never thought I would get a slot to anything. And then I got the email this morning about getting a slot for Kona. I am a little stunned and excited.

Does anyone know if you have to validate these slots as if it were a regular lottery slot?

WOW California is well represented…

So Ironman felt bad that they had to cancel Tahoe so they handed out a few slots to these people. Jez…

IM Lottery is such a joke

These were the slots that had already been allocated to Tahoe that did not end up being distributed pursuant to the cancellation. They had to distribute them some way.

Well, I guess they didn’t have to, they could have just left the slots unfilled but that seems worse.

No joke if you were there ready to swim, etc. Tell me, if you had been there and you were later offered a Kona lottery slot, would you turn it down? Or for that matter, would you turn it down any Kona lottery slot if offered to you?
.

They could allocate the slots at other races, no?

Yes I would turn it down. But that is me personally. I don’t judge others for accepting. Just find it funny the way they allocated those slots

Lame

Wow, yeah, you’re right, you convinced me (eye roll).

Concur. I was not at Lake Tahoe but believe that WTC did the right thing. These folks were already jacked by an arsonist and this gave them at least one chance to get a Kona slot since the right to compete for them was stolen. The purists might not like it but then again, they maybe they should be trying for a spot on the Olympic team if WTC doesn’t meet their standards.

Your right! I should have spent time writing up a full editorial and made countless points about folks who simply signed up for a race
And were awarded a slot to Kona.

It may turn out to be a future strategy for those hoping to KQ at future races. Which race has the most chance of being canceled

I just chose to call it what it was.

…and clearly you and the others who say they wouldn’t turn it down weren’t standing on the beach at 6:28am. I was. My buddy was next to me. I competed in this race in 2013 - and I’m local so it wasn’t as big a deal. My buddy, who spent countless hours away from his family to train for one of the most challenging courses in the World got in via lottery. Yes, he earned it. Ask his wife. Ask his kids. He didn’t get to race this year because of some ass bag who had a chip on his shoulder and decided he wanted to burn down the Sierras.

Should anyone who qualified in Florida race? After all the swim was cancelled. Yes, they deserve it (my apologies to the fast swimmers out there).

When IMLT was cancelled I felt bad for everyone who trained, traveled and absorbed financial losses for that race. So if you got in via lottery, congrats because it’s a nice consolation prize! Guess what? Not only do you have another year of training ahead of you, you also have a pretty damn good and unique story as to how you raced in Kona.

And to my buddy, you can race on my bike if you want.

This is why they cancelled the race (and here come the “I would have done it” comments).

So when Ironman cancels a race people deserve Kona slots?

Comparing Florida to Tahoe doesn’t make sense since people at Florida actually had a race and people that day were the best.

They didn’t earn a Kona slot at IMLT. They were given one, which is fine.

I’m still delusional to the fact that Kona should be for pros and top ag’ers

I’m a little surprised that Ironman chose to do a lottery for those slots allocated to this race. I think they should have been distributed among the races that Ironman allowed Tahoe participants to transfer to, or add them to THE lottery for Kona 2015.

That being said, this does seem like a way to ease the heartbreak that the cancellation of this event caused.

well said - I second (third) the above.

I too was on the beach for my 1st IM ever. I had a realistic shot in my AG for KQ. I didn’t get a lottery slot and am not bothered (I want to earn it), I don’t begrudge anyone from taking the slot - not one bit. Let’s face it Kona is a faux WTC world championship. Don’t get me wrong; I wanna go there, but, I also don’t buy into the WC thing. Not w/biggest losers, corporate big wigs, etc. there and plenty of potentially fast folks from around the world not there - maybe because it costs too much, or who knows why?

Personally, I think they should have added a few slots to each race in '15, or, as a marketing ploy piled them on top of the 50 that IMLT '15 will have (to equal 100). Hey, it’s their company and, as I told my wife yesterday, “I’ll bet they made a bunch of people really happy, some of whom had no other way of getting to Kona”. But, I’ll give the lottery winners the benefit of the doubt and say that they earned it.

It ain’t the Olympics, and more than a few times in many events for various reasons some awesome athletes have been left at home (just think how many US swimmers that are “only” 10th fastest, but, far faster than the best other countries have, or, Eddie the Eagle as an Olympian). I’m trying to teach my 10 year old “life isn’t fair.”

I’m already psyched for IMLT '15 - it can’t get any worse :expressionless:
