Kona slots at 70.3 in 2013

After this season are there any proposed or expected changes to Kona slots at 70.3 races? Any changes with St. Croix, Eagleman, Buffalo Springs or Kona 70.3; any other races cutting or adding slots? Thanks

I’d be interested in this too-

I dont see an update on St. Croix’s site either about the 2013 race- so Im thinking they may have lost spots, anyone know?

Maybe eliminate them all together and give them to actual Ironman races

This.

Hope not. It’s a nice little perk for the ridiculous fast age groupers who would prefer to get to Kona for half the price. Though at my age, if I could ever get that fast, it would be tempting to take the pro card instead and just race all the other Ironman races besides Kona (tho I do hear from those ridiculous fast AGers that going to Kona every year is exactly why they don’t turn pro).

you mean the ex-pro triathletes that are now racing AG. Must be such a great feeling to beat regular shmoes

So at what point should one be allowed to race AG after having raced pro? How does one qualify for “regular shmoe” status?

it’s hardly 1/2 the price after you take into consideration travel, lodging, equipment, etc…

question… wtc or usat event, if an AG does place top 5, does he win the prize money, or is it exclusive to pros only?

in races that offer a certain amount of prize money (I think it’s $5K), you have to be registered as a pro to receive prize money. USAT rules. So WTC also.

For most people, sure. For me… I like to pick races in places I plan to travel to anyways and then either stay with a friend or sleep in my car.

I would like to know this too.

Until I see that they are going to keep them, I’ll assume they go bye bye (at least in the continental US, e.g. Eagleman, Buffalo Springs).

I too have a fantasy of KQ w/o ever going long.

Then I woke up!

So, do you win money only if you are top 5, or just in top 5 for pro division? Say in the case 5 AG’ers take top 5 overall…

Honu is now showing 72 Kona slots on their site. Is this including the HI resident slots? There’s no mention of resident slots on there anymore. If I remember correctly there used to be 40 resident slots and 28 regular slots, so that doesn’t add up. Anyone have any info on what’s going on?

Most of, if not all the 70.3’s that offer Kona slots are licensed races, not races owned by the WTC. These slots are likely a big part of the contracts they have with the race owners.

I’d be surprised if these races lose their Kona slots.

As of now, each of the races you specifically mentioned are advertising Kona Qualifying spots on http://www.ironman.com/events/triathlon-races.aspx?d=IRONMAN%2070.3#axzz2Fi7X0BOg

You qualify for ‘regular schmoe’ status after racing pro by not renewing your national triathlon federations ‘pro card’
.

Unless you are a hand cycle athlete, Buffalo Springs has NO Kona spots for 2013.

28 open to anyone, 24 to Big Island residents and 20 to Hawaii residents
