When watching Mirinda finish the final few miles of the run, I notice many AG’s that she passed. Is there a shorter distance race going on at the same time for her to be passing these athletes. Also, do the AG’s have a different finishing line as they couldn’t have been that far from the finish when being passed by Mirinda yet I didn’t notice one of them cross the line while the pro’s were finishing.
Take a look at this PDF of the run course http://www.ironman.com/~/media/faf55507e3b24c839b7113464f4c6499/ironman%20run%20course2014.pdf
At the finish the Pros are running past people who are just beginning the marathon.
One of the interesting things about many sports commentators is that they get all caught up and describe the race/event like everyone already knows the intricacies. Things like this have easy, obvious answers but that most people watching really don’t know/understand.
As the previous poster indicated there is one portion of the course, the very start of the run and the very end of the run, where the course overlaps going the same direction. Other than that the course is two out and backs from town, first south, then north.
Hope that helps.
Thank you. It all makes sense now. That would be a little depressing though knowing the pro’s are just finishing and Im just starting the run.

Not as humbling I’m sure as a pro that had a bad day trying for a top 5, and is now walking the run, getting passed by AG athletes that started 30 minute behind them.
OTOH, I thing it’s one of the coolest aspects of the sport… that you get to compete on the same course as the best in the world on the same day. Only running would be similar, but the elites are so far removed and don;t really interact with amateurs.
It’s funny, the better the pay structure, the less the pros interact amateurs. I guess that’s because they are “real” professionals.
Could you imagine having a masters swimming world championship on the same day and held with alternating heats with the World Championships of swimming?
Happened to me in Kona. Just as I’m hopping off my bike coming into T2 I hear Riley screaming “here he comes, your 2014 Ironman World Champion Sebastian Kienle.”
If I was there they would be announcing that when I was going into T1…
I thought it was awesome watching the guy give it all he had for about 300 feet to run with the leader.

I saw that as well.
That guy was a tool. Looking for TV time.
You know that he probably paid dearly for that later on. Anyone catch the bib number?

I remember Crowie in the last KM of the 2010 Muskoka 70.3 running towards me as I was just getting my legs under me. By the time I finished he was at the airport getting ready to fly to Kona ![]()
