I did a few searches on the forums looking for information about lodging in Kona but did not see anything about the Banyan Tree Condos? Has anyone ever stayed there or is familiar with them?
The place seems to be a good balance between close enough to the race start but still far enough away to get away from the race. Traveling with my family wife and two children (12/14) and my sister. The condo is oceanfront and the condo development has a small beach. My plan is to get a rental car for the week as well.
Any insights on the Banyan Tree Condo’s or other recomendations for a family stay with a kitchen appreciated.
I don’t know that hotel/condo, but we stayed at the King K hotel this year and it was worth it. My wife, 2 sons, father in law and his GF were able to watch the race from our balcony if they wanted to. Or if they wanted to go down to watch the race they could do that, plus it took all the stress of race morning off me, since all i had to do was walk out the front door. Just something to think about.
I’m not sure about the exact location of the condo but if it’s any where around the “Banyan” area of Kona (mile marker 3 on alii dr.), then i wouldn’t stay there. i’ll look for it on my way into work this morning and post later.
the people that live there, are low income, anti-ironman, and don’t exactly have the “aloha” spirit. i’ve been called out a few time there at the beach to leave because i’m white. it’s not the place the i would want to stay with my family.
some good condos are Kona Sea Ridge, Alii Villas, Alii Cove, and Kona Sea Cliffs. good luck looking.
We were in Kona for Christmas/New Years - I recall driving by this Condo because it was a MEGA surfer area and pretty divey (and I don’t mean scuba). I wouldn’t like to stay there.
I’ve stayed there, for 3 months once, but that was 1980… It is a good location, and as long as you are not an asshole, you will have no problems there. There is a local surf spot there, but the guys are cool if you do not bother them. If you are on the water side, then you will have great views, and get to watch the surfers there…It is a big complex, and I would guess that only a few people actually live there. If you get a good deal there, I wouldn’t pass it up. Of course I’m a surfer, and over the years have made nice with the locals, so I actually enjoy that area…
