Any recommendations on a bike shop in Kona to rent a road bike during IM week? I’m renting as spectator, not racer. Can this be easily done or do I need to reserve way ahead of time in order to secure one?
Is is possible to bike the Kona course in the days before the race or is that frown upon? Is it even possible or are the roads not safe due to traffic? I may bring my own bike if renting is not feasible.
As ironclm said, Bike Works / Cycle Station. You provably need to act fast if you want to rent a bike, they only have a limited number. You should be able to ride the course race week with no issue. There will be a lot of people out there on the course. The Queen K has a very wide shoulder so you will be perfectly safe to ride it.

Agreed, except Cycle Station is no more, so it’s just Bike Works.
Contact Nick Nelson with VeloFix Hawaii. He may still have rentals left and will come to you. Nick is a great guy (and wrench). I have been working with him for about 6 years (he was with Bike Works prior to starting his business) for my race and training (when I am in Kona) needs.
Cycle Station closed after Lavaman this year. Oliver is focusing on his other businesses now. That leaves Bike Works and VeloFix Hawaii as your primary rental sources. Book early with either one. Bike Works is in New Industrial fronting the Queen K. VeloFix drives their big red van to you, delivers and sets up the bike and picks it up at the end.
BTW… Over the past couple of years I have used Velofix Hawaii a handful of times for SAG services. Having support made the riding experience significantly better (and safer) and also enabled me and my buddies to truly experience the beauty of the big island, rather than just riding up and down the Queen K/IM course.
In case you are wondering, I have NO affiliation with Velofix Hawaii (other than the hat and water bottles they gave me – haha).
