Kona Bike disaster

Well…in Hawaii out for a training ride and the steerer tube on my BMC TM02 snapped today while out on the Queen K. Somehow avoided a crash but bike is not rideable as I think the entire fork needs to be replaced unless I am mistaken. Guessing I’m going to try and find a place to rent something but bummed as dialing in fit on a new bike in a couple days will not be easy. Any ideas?

Could you not replace the fork? I suspect with the Uplace-BMC team ting that BMC might have a big presence in Kona this year. They might be able to help you out. Good luck. I’m about to head to the airport to head that way.

I sure will try and track them down…didn’t know they were coming…thanks!

Cycle Station is the BMC dealer on the Big Island. You can try contacting them - (808) 327-0087. BMC has had a booth at the expo the last few years, too.

If you’re really stuck, PM me I have a cervelo soloist size 54, 175 cranks. no aerobars though.

You will likely find a better solution, just might need something to train on in the mean time.

Just got in so I will build our bikes tomorrow….

Maurice

I fly out tomorrow and can bring you a fork if All3sports has it in stock… that being said, I would go with the local Kona shop since they have a whole week to get it delivered if needed.

Best of luck!

Sounds like you’re getting some good replies. If you rent, I’ve been very happy with Bike Works Kona in the past. Was able to rent very nice bikes from them and they’re a well-stocked shop with great people.

Hey Steve,

Long time no see…sorry to hear about your issue. If you’re still empty-handed, shoot me an e-mail & I may be able to get you something.

BMC is likely on the ground indeed with the Uplace team. Plus check in with a local shop

Wow…what a great outpouring of incredible offers. I will check with the local shop and see what they can do…stay tuned!

Hey Brian…yes, …good to hear from you thanks so much…will circle back in a few hours after the shops open here…I can’t sleep!

Steve - we are here for a Retul bike fit course in Kona starting Sunday (tomorrow). We are in need of people to fit on bikes as we learn, so if you do rent a bike and need a fit, please email me ASAP and I’ll forward your info over to the head instructor. The class is 4 days long with the last day being only a half day and reserved for Mountain bike fitting.

We will try to help get you comfortable on whatever bike you end up riding.

Denise

Oh and the fit would be free of course.

Most importantly glad you are not hurt. I had a very good friend meet a life goal of KQ and crashed hitting reflector during a wind gust at high speed and broke his pelvis…watched his friends racing from crutches and has not KQ’d since (this was 2006). Every year on Kona week, I just hope everyone gets to the start line unscathed…I think with all the offers you are set and will get dialed in close enough. The human body is amazing at adapting so don’t let slight deltas get into your head.

All the best 1 week from now!

Chris leito was offering his bike to someone to use on instagram…

Thanks again to all for the great suggestions and offers for help. STers often get a bad rep for the sarcasm and wise ass one liners but you guys have been nothing but generous and helpful on this one. Much appreciated.

Just dropped the bike off at Cycle Station and the guy there couldn’t have been nicer. Hopefully he will be able to fix me up, even if it is with a mismatched fork…will update later, perhaps with a pic of whatever they can cobble together

Chris Lieto posted on FB that he has a bike for Kona if someone needs it,

Anyone need a bike for ‪#ýIronman‬ this week? Got one! Campy electric 11 with powertap wheel, size large. Comment on Instagram if you want it.

Hi Steve,

Sorry to hear about your issue. On the other hand, it’s awesome to see the community reaching out to make sure you’re all set.

We’ve already heard from CycleStation and will make sure that they have what they need to get you rolling again asap

Awesome

This thread should be permanently pinned to the top!

I agree this is one of the more heartwarming threads I have seen on ST!
