Kona 2025 IM World Championship Race Day Thread

Cassandra who; or was this meant to be in another thread?

Jackie Hering released a recap. I’ve always been a fan of her and her video reminded me of why that is. The fact that her stomach shut down then she says she $%^& herself on the run, but finished what she started makes her pretty fucking hard-core in my book. Brutal day.

Interesting informed discussion on pacing, both on the bike and the run, between Ross and Mike

from 29:57

[After Chicago marathon chat] “Another physiological “failure” happened in the Kona Ironman where Lucy Charles-Barclay and Taylor Knibb raced so aggressively that they first rode and then ran each other to the point of proverbial physiological destruction. We explore how [lack of] pacing in the context of a warm [hot] day caused those dramatic scenes.”

Love Jackie.

That’s great, thanks for the time stamp!

After listening to this pod I now understand exactly why Mark was yelling at Kat to “risk it all” when she started the marathon.

And here’s the ‘Risk it for the Biscuit’ take: superb video from @talbotcox

This is an absolute must listen. Kat reveals more than most athletes would, she’s funny and charming as usual, and Chelsea, well, the best interviewer in triathlon just does her thing.

Not sure if anyone else notices, but you can hear Taylor breaking down and struggling to hold herself together at the end of this. A different bit of emotion than we’re used to seeing from her. This is a video worthy of going viral.

I heard that and thought she was trying not to laugh.

Nah, she’s choking up and holding it back. We’ve all heard her exuberant giggly laugh. This wasn’t that.

I was sad all over again for her (kudos to the Knibb/@talbotcox combo for the script). Not sure what she meant by “If you told me I could either win Kona or keep my career, I’d choose my career every time”. I guess by that last aid station she had lost the ability to reason (and was assured to be caught by Loevseth, according to my maths while watching ‘live’ and scrutiny of the stats 30.9km timing mat onwards). She didn’t nearly die trying to win, super bravely, thank goodness. Good idea not to revisit that well though.
I have zero doubt she’ll “be back” and “get to the top of Palani and finish the job”.
However next year I fear she’ll find that she’ll get to the top of Palani, and finish, but at least one other will have got there first.

that was a good one.

Yeah, I hear it now. Was doing a trainer workout watching the first time and didn’t register the same emotions.

That was really good

I listened and I must have missed it, why did he say that?

It is just my read of it based on what she said, but seems like he was just encouraging her to let it rip since she struggles to go to the well like LCB/Taylor. She is more calculated and reserved and it leads to consistent results, but sometimes to win the big one you have to risk it and I think Mark could see that the chance was there and he was right.

Gotcha you ok .

Based off the results of that day I would say Kat has the right instincts vs blowing up then .

I think her instincts are what get here 2,2,2 last 3 worlds before the dnf.

Trying harder might have just got rid of the other 2,2,2 .

Everyone thinks everyone else is going deeper in the well than they are , mostly they are not. Sometimes it just looks more difficult.

What more can you ask from an @ironmantri World Championship? The 2025 Women’s race in Kona delivered it all:
:high_voltage: A rookie champion
:woman_running: A course record marathon creating the 3rd closest finish in Kona history
:eight_o_clock: Multiple close position battles throughout the Top 10
:broken_heart: Two heartbreaking late DNFs

  • @solveig_lovseth rode the 2nd fastest bike split in Kona history — on debut. She also had the 2nd fastest run and was the first athlete to cross the finish line to become the 2025 Kona Champion.
  • @katr_matthews ran a 2:47 marathon, breaking @tri.anne.haug 's run course record by exactly one minute. Kat finished only 35 seconds behind Solveig, the 3rd closest finish in Kona history.
  • Nice 2024 Champion @laura_philipp_tri didn’t have the perfect day she was looking for but still secured a podium finish in 3rd.
  • For most of the race, there were less than two minutes between @dr_hannah_wells and @lisa.perterer in their battle for 4th place.
  • Just one year after giving birth to daughter Poppy, @hollylawrencetri finished 6th with three solid legs in her Kona debut.
  • Late in the run, four athletes fought for 7th place — across the line there were only 47 seconds between @jocelynmccauley @svensksara @leoleo_k and @marlenedeboer
  • @lucycharles93 broke away in the first 100m of the swim and never looked back. @taylorknibb closed a 2-minute gap on the climb to Hawi and took the lead into T2. Both fought hard for the win, but Lucy had to drop out in the Energy Lab, and Taylor wasn’t able to continue less than 2 miles from the finish line. For the first time EVER in pro long-distance racing, both T2 leaders failed to finish.
