Has anybody out there had arthoscopic surgery done on their knee (and I’m sure there are a ton who have)?
I just had it done on my right knee and was wondering when I should expect to get back out running and riding again? My surgeon, who used to do tris, said that when he had it done he was lightly jogging on his knee within a week. I’ve heard that they are fast recoveries and I want to get back out and ride before all the negative effects of pizza and beer loading catch up to me.
Damn you pizza and beer and your loads of delicousness!
I had my knee scoped three weeks ago. I’ll could probably start running again next week. I tried yesterday and it’s still too sore on impact. I was biking and swimming within first week. I rode steady the first week and that was a mistake. I was very sore after that and was limping around again. I wish I just kept it at an easy spin for the first week. My knee didn’t hurt at all when I was riding. It was when I got off my bike.HTH
I had my knee scoped in May. I did not do the rehab because I felt fine and it was incovenient. Tried to run after 5 weeks and it hurt. Then I found out that one of the knee/leg muscles shuts down because of the surgery and needs to be reactiviated with rehab exercises. So it took me 8 weeks before I could start running. Do the rehab.
BTW, I was biking and swimming the day before and two days after the surgery. That was one of the reasons I did not think the rehab was necessary. Good luck.
Ive had both done…and I believe I was riding, spinning very small gears on the trainer on both at about day 7 . I think I rode outside about day 14 or so. I would wait to swim until the surgeon saysthe small wounds are healed and it OK to get in the water. Its November…and even if your racing next spring, I sure wouldnt push running at all untilweek 3 or 4 . Dont rush anything , your not going to speed the healing process, only slow it down by coming back quicker.
I had ACL, not ortho, but I found that the more I did and the sooner I did it, the better off I was. The days/weeks I took it easy because it hurt/was stiff or work got in the way of rehab, it seemed to take twice as long to get back to where I was. Go by feel.
Sounds like rehab is pretty quick. I’m planning on getting into the gym and jumping on the hand cycle for a while as to not overdo it yet. Thanks for the advice.
I’ve had arthroscopic surgery 3x now. I wasn’t running when I had the first one, and it took a whole 6 months before I felt good. The second two, I was feeling great within a couple of weeks.
I’d agree that you should start out with some light spinning. Make sure that you don’t ache inside of the knee before or after. Gradually increase the load until you can go pretty hard, then start some light jogging.
Make sure that you listen to your doc, though. He knows how bad the injury was and what you should be able to do.
The general rule that I’ve heard is that you should be fully recovered in 6 weeks.
