Anyone else have any problems with the compression socks covering age on people legs?
This really annoyed me in LP and even more so this past weekend at timberman. I was having to look at people faces…or race number trying to figure out who was in my AG.
These knee socks I feel are a way for dudes to go incognito. Are there going to be any rules going forward addressing this new trend?
Another issue is they get numbered then spread a thick layer of sunscreen
over it and rub it in. Then you have no #

No kidding. I hardly ever have a number on my arms or legs once I start the bike. Either sunscreen or pam or water destroys it. I haven’t figured out how to prevent this.
When I wore compression socks at Wildflower, I just asked them to mark my lower hamstring. As mentioned about the sunscreen it all comes down to if you want your AG visible or not. IMO, hiding it is bad practice.
I never really understood this rationale. Run YOUR race at the most beneficial pace for YOU.
Let’s just say that you’re in the zone on the bike leg, riding right around your targeted threshold of, say, 320 Watts. If an AG comes flying by you, you only really have two choices. #1: Sprint after them, go way to deep into the red and crack, or #2: Stay at your targeted Wattage and continue on your way to your intended PB.
The smart money is on option #2! So, does it really matter whether or not that person who just passed you may, or may not, be in your AG?
why do you give a shit about someones age?

I can understand the rationale…It’s called AG racing. If you see someone in your own AG, you will likely make a more important decision than if some random person passes you that is not in your AG. Especially if your racing for a place or perhaps a Kona spot. Of course you want to run your own race, but when the competition determines how you have to finish that race, you want the best knowledge on the other competitors around you.
Lets say with a 5km to go, you are “nursing” yourself to the finish. If you see a competitor pass you that is in your age group, I’d say you’ll try and fight it out vs if the person passed you wasnt in your age group. So, I can understand this rationale. Of course you should always HTFU, etc., but lets be honest, that doesnt happen 100% of the time, alot of times in races, strategy is important.
Edit: It can be important just based on numbers. If you start with 50 AG’s in your age group and you come out in 5th, than you would like to know how many pass you in your bike scenario, because it could come into play later on. So while you may still want to stay in your zone on the bike, it’s important to know if that person you passed was someone you know you need to repass at a later stage in the race. Again, you can “race your own race” all you want to, and say people should not worry about stuff like that, but it defintely happens in races. Strategy for a race position is a part of the game.
well …honestly has not bee an issue this year but if it came down to two-three miles to go at an IM for a kona spot it makes a big difference.
I would never alter may race on the bike if someone in my AG comes passing or early on the run…but with a mile or so to go and someone within your AG surges I would give a huge shit if it came to an AG spot…ist that the point to having you age written on your leg?
then you should lobby your rd to change the rules. ages on calves are only there for the benefit of the athletes. there is no requirement under any rule book that necessitates them. as such there is no requirement for anyone to a) get them, b) keep them from getting compromised or c) cover them up. that said, if these are the things that help you sleep at night, i fear for your long term health. anyone who wears compression socks to cover their ag up is a pussy. that said, i highly doubt that your paranoia is justified.
