Knee Gets Tight When Sitting

I know this is a common symptom of “runner’s knee.” I am just getting over some IT band issues and my knee feels about 90% during the weekend when I am not seated at work all day. But after a few hours in the office, my knee really tightens up, specifically right below the knee cap (and to a lesser extent above and around the knee cap). It’s not pain, just tightness.

Any suggestions besides not sitting? I try to stretch 3-4 times during the day at the office, any specific stretches to counteract whatever is happening when I am seated? Thanks.

Since I don’t know of anything that can actually help you, maybe try this:

HAHA, thanks! My friend actually has a Dwight bobble-head on his desk at work!

So, what’s getting tight in my knee while I am seated? Why? And what can I do about it?

The IT band itself seems to be almost 100%, it’s just this tightness that is the problem now.

6 hours into the workday and it is as tight as ever.

I rode yesterday and it was certainly feeling OK, it’s fine in the gym, at work though, when I get up, I am miserable. Help!!!

I don’t know what you’ve “got,” but when I was having aching when sitting (in theatres, flights, etc.) the doctor removed (cleaned up?) the plica and the problem went away.

Then again, what do I know?

Welcome to the world of the athlete!!

HAHA, yeah…thanks!

I’ts my own stupid fault I have this injury, but I have (for the first time ever) been responsible about healing. Saw an orthopedist, have been loyal to my stretching and strengthening exercises, ice, 2 weeks off from running and riding, etc.

Sitting at work, I get up and my knee feels like I can’t run a step or pedal a signle stroke. I am really starting to get frustrated and depressed with this injury.

What’s getting tight in the seated position that is fine when I am standing or walking?

dont know if this is any use but heres my two cents…

ive never bought the whole stretching thing. ive had periods when ive stretched and periods when ive not stretched. i got knee injuries either way. just for giggles i started doing yoga. (specifically rodney yees yoga conditioning for athletes)…i did that for a week, everyday and felt amazing. nothing to do with injuries or anything, it just made me feel good. so i kept it up for a while, but only did it once a week or so. ive been good ever since and i used to get knee injuries at the very least once per year. my guess is that there was a critical point of flexibility i had never acheived before which this video helped me to get to. it focuses alot on the lower back and hamstrings. once again this is just me and what seemed to help. could be total b.s.

No problem. How old are you? Give me your running history. Exactly where is the pain in your knees? Are you having any tightness running down your thigh?

I’m no medical expert but this happens to me from time to time. I went through a tough 2 years of runner’s knee about five years ago and during that time my knees would be aggravated by sitting for long periods of time. Since then I’ve recovered pain free use of my knees, most likely because my job has forced me to cut back on my carefree days of training post college. But when I step up my training I notice occasional knee tightness after sitting for longer periods of time. Essentially, you are having tightness in the hamstrings and/or lower back. These are highly associated with knee pain. Whenever I sense this happening I do some hurdler stretches by putting my foot up on my desk or anything waist high. This is the best stretch I’ve found that I can isolate my hams, but try whatever works for you. I notice immediate improvement. I probably do this about every half hour when I feel the pain coming on.

Give it a try.
