Knee Ache -- Shoes?

I am fairly new to serious running, having not run competitively at any time in my life. Started doing 5ks and a sprint tri in the past year. I am not super fast, nor super slow (7 min miles). I am over 30 but under 50, and am not overweight. Like everyone, I’d like to get faster.

Until recently, I had no trouble with my knees after running 3-6 miles (typically every other day). Recently, I changed shoes, and now after running just 3 miles, my knees ache. Not right away, after about 12 hours or so, they start to feel “hot” and ache (which continues for a day or so). When I bought the shoes (Adidas Supernova Sequence 2), they told me that I needed some stability to prevent pronation. Every other time I’ve been evaluated, I’ve been told I was a “neutral” runner/striker. Prior to the Adidas, which feel great when I put them on (very good fit and cushioning), my last pair were Brooks. I didn’t like them, as I felt like my foot was slipping around inside them. Zoots fit me pretty well, but I’ve only used them for the sprint tri and a few times prior, and I’d like more cushioning.

Anyway, my questions: could the shoes be causing my knees to ache? Does anyone who fits well in Adidas have a suggestion for other shoes for me to try?

I have found that some shoes do the same for me, I am a firm believer that if my knees are hurting & shoes have changed not to run in them any more, I also rotate shoes I run in. My knees took a beating from years of skiing/racing 120 days a season 4-5 years straight. Sucks to get old…

Thanks. When I bought the shoes, I asked whether having stability shoes when I don’t need them could cause me any problems. They said they didn’t think so. After a bit longer of a rest, I’m going to try running in my old shoes to determine if it really is the shoes, or just me getting older. Seems strange that I would have such a sudden onset of dramatic symptoms, when I had none before. The only think I can think of is the change in shoes.

Maybe you could use the trainer Zoots? They are okay for everyday use. Newtons aren’t bad. I bet Nike lunar trainers would fit you okay, Nike lunar glide. Mizuno would also fit your foot but I’m not familiar enough to suggest specific models.
