That thing is cheap. Engines made her in Detroit (Dundee). 100,000 mile warranty. $20 G’s loaded.
Do they suck? What say you ST’ers?

In my books you a re considered very cool. Even in the 80s you were racing on a Colnago. These Hyundai are very very uncool. Might be a good vehicle, but it is not for you. Don’t get the Tucson name confuse you with some Italian exotica. It is the most un-exotic car possible. Give it a miss. If you have to have a small SUV another Subaru will be way cooler with their WRC heritage.
I think you should go for the new Subaru Forester. I just checked and it has 165hp for the basic model. 220hp for the 2.5 turbo, and they have 3.0 litre version too. It cost a Cervelo Dual more than the Korean crap. And it is based on the Subaru Impreza platform with AWD system.
Hmmm. I see what you mean. I am the biggest dork though. You should see what I wear to work. Disaster. There’s a reason I haven’t been on a date in 8 months. When you look up dork- my picture is in the dictionary.
A couple days ago my buddy Rebecca, who is a full-on fox and 24 very shapely years old told me, “You need to come to grips with your dorkness. It won;t change. Once a dork, always a dork.”
And besides, a Subaru Forester with a hood scoop and all the cool stuff is over 30 G’s. Damn. I work at a bike shop…
With that Hyundai (trying to be Honda?) you will be a single for 8 years, not 8 months
According to this site: http://auto.consumerguide.com/auto/new/reviews/full/index.cfm/id/38234/
A new Forester costs $21,295-27,395
And the HundeeIaye $17,499-22,799
Perhaps the most basic Forester will suffice.
Hmmm. True. My furnace did a Chernobyl last night. Epic. It will be months before i can buy a new car.
Unfortunately, me being single doesn;t have anythin to do with the car I drive. I wouldn’t be any less abrasive if I had a BMW 725i.
I hope it is not ‘below you’, but would you buy a used car? Plenty of them out there at reasonable prices.
There is a write up about the Tucson in this months Car and Driver. They give it a pretty good review, in a “chick car” sort of way though. In most ways it is as good as the Santa Fe and significantly cheaper. Hyundai quality control has gotten world class with the latest cars, and with the warranty your in pretty good shape for a cheap car.
That said, I for one am sick of Tom whining about how he can’t afford a new car, new furnace, new whatever, because he owns a bike shop. I pull in a 6 figure salary and I can’t afford to go to France for an Ironman, Thailand, New Zealand, Austria, Africa, etc, etc, etc. I don’t put together a new bike for myself 4 times a year. I don’t have a room in my house dedicated to my bike trainer and outfitted with a huge TV and stereo. Christ, I’ve been saving up to buy a new stem! It is no secret to me that Tom is independently wealthy and the bike shop gig is just a tax write off. Tom, go out and buy the Porsche Cayenne Turbo (put it on your Discover card for the 2% cash back) and quit pretending.
Hey Tom, I think you are pretty familiar with the benefits of the Subaru AWD system,eh? Unless you have had any bad personal experiences with the Scooby I would look at a used Legacy Estate (Station wagon), hugely practical for Michigan winters and hauling bikes for racing/training without having to take them apart. If you have had any problems with the Subaru have a look at the VW Passat 4motion or Audi A6 Avant quattro.
I can’t afford to go either. But one day I’ll be dead. I should be dead already. 3 times. so even if I can’t afford it… I go anyway.
Because someday I’ll be dead, then it will be too late.
My buddy Michael R. Rabe can’t go. He’s dead. My buddy Maurice can’t go. He’s dead.
honda element is about the same price. they dont suck.
By that logic I guess you can see why IM is so popular. There are a lot of us who will be dead one day. Like Clint said “We’ve all got it coming.”
Anyway, just teasing you. I could probably afford to race and travel more if I got rid of some of my obviously expensive cars, and having a wife has not generated much positive cash flow either. It’s all what you prioritize.
I’ll buck the trend here Tom and suggest that the Tuscon would be a great vehicle to buy. Hyundai has improved their quality and design significantly in recent years. I was looking at one a few months ago but ended up buying a small used car since my wife does a lot of commuting into Toronto and we needed better gas mileage and a cheaper cost than buying brand new. I was very impressed with the Tuscon though and would consider it. I was just at the Auto show in Toronto last weekend though and I would wait until summer when Mazda comes out with the new 5 model. It seats six, drives like a “sporty” car (zoom zoom zoom commercials) and you can fold the seats down to give lots of room for a couple of bikes. It starts at 19,995 in Canada so I’d expect that you would get it well equipped for around $20 000 down south where you are.
The first ever NEW car I bought was a hyundai elentra - going back about 5 years - used to travel a lot at the time and put 150 000 miles on it - no problems with it at all - engine / tranny etc was still great when i sold it 3 years later - only issue I ever had was the air con and warranttee took care of that…
Tom-
My pal knows the Queer Eye for The Straight Guy boys…he owes me a favor…should I call it in and send them to Detroit?..its on me man.
Negative on the Tucson.
I’m sure its a good dependable SUV, but, a friend picked up a BMW X5 pre-owned Executive Lease return with 50K on the clock and an extended 100K warranty for 22,000…sweet ride.
Tom…
This is all you http://www.saabusa.com/saabjsp/92x/index.jsp
or maybe http://www.pontiac.com/vibe/index.jsp?brand=home&pagename=home
or http://www.chevrolet.com/hhr06/
Ask yourself how many Hyundai dollars flow back into your shop? Probably none!?
Then ask how many Ford guys come into your shop at some point during the day? Hmmm…maybe investing in our American cars will keep some of us local Big 3 guys employed which will allow us to spend our FAT paychecks to keep you employed
Sure the Hyundai is cheap…but its kinda like that Ebay false economy you talk about.
I’m at GM and if a vehicle in our family looks good I can get you at least the supplier discount.
I agree. I was looking at an Equinox too. nice. And that Saab rules.
A guy in my store told me the engines for the Hyundai’s are made in Dundee. Was he funnin’ me?

I’m not sure if that plant is up and running. I thought ‘06 was the target, so maybe he’s funnin’ ya.
“Unfortunately, me being single doesn;t have anythin to do with the car I drive. I wouldn’t be any less abrasive if I had a BMW 725i.”
especially since there is no such vehicle! Hey, I was going to come up this weekend for the Ironman University, but you sold out. I would have loaned you my AMG Mercedes to go out trolling for a date …
