Kind of OT: time/motion question - GPS sensitivity

Not stricly triathlon related, but at least it’s sport!

I’m looking for a system to track athletes as they move around a field - for distance and heart rate information. The sport in question is field hockey, but it could be soccer or lacrosse. There are some (very) expensive options out there that would provide very detailed information, but as a lower cost option I was wondering whether people thought the forerunner 201 or other types of gps devices would be sensitive enough to track shorter distances the kids will typically cover before chaning direction. Any other ideas?

Many thanks
Nick

Here’s the kind of thing we’d like to be able to do

http://www.gpsports.com/hockey.asp.

I read an article on active.com about someone doing this during a professional soccer match, but they never actually said HOW they did it… the GPS from Timex calcualtes every 3.5 seconds, it will move distances from moving my arm back and forth, so I would think that it would work. It may be hard to shield from hits or contact which seem to mess with it. I hit the GPS unit on a tree during a trail run and it shut off.
