So now there is a resolution before the SF Board of Supervisors to stop the Blue Angels shows during Fleet Week. Too loud, too dangerous. Are you freaking kidding me?? I’m going to be pissed if I have to drive my kid to Sacramento to see them (she loves them). During FW they buzz her school everyday and the kids go crazy for them. We have some real party poopers here.
That does suck…the Blue Angels put on a hell of a show. I wonder how on earth they decided that they were “dangerous”?
Spot
Because of that recent crash.
You gotta read the first three posts in this thread in order to really appreciate the comedy.
I used to work as a legislative aide on the SF Board of Supervisors and every year on the Thursday before the Fleet Week show the Blue Angels would begin their practice runs over the city. As soon as we heard that first roar of the first F-18 over the city we’d all run and flip the phones over to voicemail because the calls would come flooding in and did for the next 3 days. A lot of old people and people with pets hate the Blue Angels and the noise.
When I worked in a highrise downtown it usually meant 2 days of nobody working as everyone ran around the 28th floor in circles following the planes…bosses hate the Blue Angels too.
I like em myself.
Grumpy Grannies need to learn to deal for a week. Fun factor aside, the Blue generate a lot of revenue.
No matter what it is, there are always going to be people complaining.
Hmmm, SF and the military. I’m guessing this has everything to do with “We don’t like the military” rather than “Those planes are too loud”. If I’m not mistaken SF has ALSO, eliminated recruiting from public HS’s, refused a grant for a military boat museum and shut down ROTC. Could be wrong, but I thought I remembered all that happening.

I really don’t think its indicative of SF in general. Fleet Week is a big draw, during the air shows the waterfront is crazy packed with people. My daughter’s school named their sports teams after the Blue Angels. My daughter said this morning " I’m tired of people wanting to ban everything. We should ban banning". She’s also pissed off abut the parrot feeding ban.
I’m guessing this has everything to do with “We don’t like the military” rather than “Those planes are too loud”.
Hmmm. You know what? Detroit is trailblazing the path to George W. Bush’s impeachment. So far they are the only City Council in the country to have the COURAGE to pass a resolution to impeach President Bush and Vice-President Cheney.
Face it world…you are all just FOLLOWERS!
Bernie
Parrot feeding ban? You’ve got to be kidding. Why ban feeding parrots?
I know every time there was a crash at Canadian air shows, there were all sorts of hand wringing over cancelling the shows or disbanding the teams. Hopefully this will just go away as some of the minority visceral responses die down. That is what has usually happened.
HAHAHA She is so funny.
I love the Blue Angels. The SF Stupervisors are a bunch of twits. As are many of the residents of San Francisco. (You, me and Snackie excluded, of course.)

Its ridiculous. The ban is on feeding them in public parks. So you can fed them on private property. Its still ok to fee the pigeons, apparently its only bad to feed pretty birds. There is a documentary about them and the once homeless guy who started feeding them. He considers them his birds and doesn’t like that they respond to others now. Here’s snackie perpetrating what will soon be a crime:

I love seeing my tax dollars hard at work.
The noise is momentary, a few times a day for a week. Most of the show here is over the water, not much of a danger to the public.
That blows.
Have they finished the investigation into the Beaufort, SC crash?
They were scheduled to perform here in my tiny little town’s festival the following weekend and ended up cancelling. I remember most people I know hoped that they would still perform (because they are the centerpiece of the festival), but I personally wasn’t thrilled with the idea of them flying over my house with the investigation still going on.
What is the surprise? The supervisors hate the military and they hate military recruiting even more. They would get rid of fleet week if there weren’t so many dollars involved.

Both you and Art are just a little off base.
Its pretty much all about “those planes are too loud”. If you live in the city during Fleet week 4 days of low level F-18 flyovers is pretty stressful for a lot of old people and skittish pets…especially wen they come at you down wind and you don’t hear them until they are right over head…scares the crap out of you. I’ve seen them set off a whole block of car alarms.
The Board of Education which is not the Board of Supervisors did vote to end funding of the ROTC in public schools by a narrow majority (prompting the resignation of the Superintendent) because yof the military’s policy towards gays. San Francisco has human rights ordinances that forbid the city from contracting with or funding any entity that discriminates on the base of race gender or sexual orientation. The Board of Ed were putting the School District at risk of litigation if they continued to fund ROTC and its don’t ask don’t tell policy.
San Francisco cannot eliminate military recruiting from public schools.
San Francisco did have an option to bring a decommissioned battleship here a number of years ago ( as did every city in the country with a waterfront) but decided against commiting any public funds to the venture because A. the City is running at a deficit right now and B. these sort of maritie museums don’t make money and end up costing a small fortune to operate. Look at the USS Hornet over in Alameda which is falling apart.
San Francisco politicos love Fleet Week…they get to ride in helicpoters out to the incoming carriers, do a catapult take off from the deck, and play with all the expensive toys…plus the city makes a mint in parking tickets during the week. If they really hated the military as you claim, you’d see organized protests which there have never been. Ask any sailor or Marine if they’ve ever felt unwelcom in SF during Fleet Week…they love coming here and the city for the most part loves hosting them.
Art has never let facts get in the way of a good neocon spin, or the chance to slam the left.
Art has never let facts get in the way of a good neocon spin, or the chance to slam the left.
I doubt Art could name a single member of the San Francisco Board, yet he seems to know their collective personal opinions towards the military. I have spent many years working in SF politics and apart from Gerardo Sandoval making a fool of himself on the O’Reilly show I can’t think of any overtly anti military rhetoric coming out of the Board chambers…anti war sure, anti don’t ask don’t tell, yup lots of it…anti-military nope can’t think of any.
If Art wants to follow SF Board politics he should read up on Ed Jew…our lone conservative on the Board who is about to go to jail for taking $40,000 in cash bribes from people looking for city business permits. Those damn conservatives at it again!
Blocked!
San Francisco’s skies are safe for the Blue Angels. A Board of Supervisors committee Monday rejected a measure that would have called for a permanent end to the high-flying, aerobatic show that happens yearly during Fleet Week.
The committee voted 2-1 to table the measure, authored by Supervisor Chris Daly, effectively killing it. But Daly, who cited public safety and noise concerns as his reasons for proposing the ban, promised to continue pushing it.
“We’ve been lucky here in San Francisco,” Daly said, noting that 26 crew members have died in incidents since 1946 when the Navy formed the flight demonstration team.
The stupidest part is Daly’s logic of 26 deaths. From another cite pointing out this is stupid:
Since 2000 there have been 1,200 injuries and 7 deaths in San Francisco bus accidents (deaths and injuries in San Francisco due to the Blue Angels over the same period, zero)… does that mean we should ban buses from San Francisco streets? If Daly is concerned about public safety then surely he would consider the merits of such a measure.
Daly is a poopie pants who is bent out of shape because the people love Gavin, no matter what he does.
Thank goodness I don’t have to drive to Sacto for the show.
