KICKR controlled by Stages on TrainerRoad Config?

Anyone using a KICKR with TrainerRoad and using a Stages PM to provide the power data? Basically, I want to use my Stages meter and have TrainerRoad use that power data to control the KICKR in ERG mode.

Supposed to work, I just haven’t gotten it there yet. I have the Stages connected via ANT+ and the KICKR connected as a Wahoo KICKR via Bluetooth (have tried ANT as well) and not as a power meter as you can only have one PM connected.

Seems like it should be working, but the workout is not controlling the KICKR as expected in ERG mode.

Any idea what the hell I’m missing?

Thanks!

Only the KICKR power can currently control the KICKR. There are rumors the option to allow another PM to control the KICKR might be in the works but it’s only rumors at this point.

Hmm, That’s not what I just got from TrainerRoad support… That would make more sense though…

That is an interesting idea.

If the trainer didn’t have to have a power meter, but instead just the load generator, it could probably be a lot cheaper and I’m guessing would be very appealing to a lot of athletes who already have crank or pedal based power meters.

Power meter communicates with computer. Computer controlls load generator on trainer.

  1. Makes the trainer a simpler piece of equipment
  2. Athlete sees a consistent power meter on and off the trainer

This has been discussed to some degree on one of the KICKR accuracy threads.

My basic idea is that if I ride outside and race with the Stages, then those are the #'s that are most important to me. So I want TR to get power data from Stages and have the KICKR provide ERG mode based on the Stages power #'s.

I have a Stages PM and I use the Kickr and Trainer Road for all my workouts. I don’t use the ERG mode though as I key my workout into Trainer Road and then use my stages to hit the necessary wattage. Takes me about 60-90 seconds to key in my workouts and then I’m good to go. Much easier than before where I would write my workouts down on a piece of paper and then try to do the math in my head for interval times. Now Trainer Road alerts me 3 seconds prior to an interval changing. Love it.

ERG mode is over rated. You can’t use ERG mode in a race, you need to practice holding a specific wattage by yourself.
