So at swimming today a guy who was hyper eager to lead a set kicked off the wall but found my leg instead. Haven’t felt pain like that… ever. I think my yell could be heard for miles.
So now I have a big 'ole contusion in my quad and I’m set to race 150 miles this weekend. What is the best protocol for treating a monster charlie horse? I can walk without pain, but it’s very tender. I iced it on and off for an hour after it happened and am icing it now. Going to try to ride on the trainer tonight a bit.

Any ideas?

Elevate as much as possible, after 24-48 hrs post injury discontinue ice and start moist heat 3-5 times a day. Avoid aspirin, as it inhibits clotting, choose aceteminophen.
dude, I am legally blind and I always have a bad ass contusion on my leg to deal with…my friends even joke that if I am not bleeding, it isn’t a race. Forget about it!!
go quickly and get some Arnica Gel- I think they even sell it at Walgreens stores now- I got mine at a Whole Foods- also you can get the pills to take orally
.
Did you at least beat the crap out of the guy? It never ceases to amaze me that people have absolutely no sense of proprioception… I’ve been in races with pool swims and when I went to flip turn felt something soft and lycra covered rather than hard and wall-like. Yes, I still made contact - but instead of getting their gut pounded in they got a gentle push with the balls of my feet and then an instant recoil. Were I to “explode” off the wall hitting it with force (such as to cause a major contusion on your leg) I’d certainly have bruised feet…
I’m afraid I don’t really have any advice as to how to treat it. You’re going to be just fine, though. You’re way too stubborn to let something like this derail you!
Your the doctor, why are you asking all of us???
Seriously, what I can remember of my stint in athletic training at Pitt 15 years ago (post my engineering phase, prior to my biology/psychology phase) was that deep thigh bruises can be tricky to treat/heal. One thing I vaguely remember was to avoid heat as if if recall you don’t want to stimulate too much blood to the area as the healing process can trigger bone growth on your femur. I’m pretty sure I remember the term (M.O.), but have no idea how to spell it! Hopefully your bruise is not that bad!
Sorry to hear about it, hopefully it’s not too bad this weekend and you can work through it. And hopefully the ass that kicked you gets some bad karma.
Good luck. You could have wrenched you knee like I did two weeks before the kinetic half and had to do the walk of shame on the run course with a stupid ice pack. But at least my knee now is 100%
When I used to swim in HS, at really big meets, we’d have WAY too many people crammed into one lane during warm ups. A lot of times we would have more than one team in a lane (always fun). Our coach told us that if someone on another team was crowding the wall and “messing up our warmup” we were to flip turn off of them. I have no idea how many people I’ve done this to! It wasn’t mean spirited or anything, just a reminder that they weren’t supposed to be hanging out at the end of the lane clogging it up!
While I have been known to give Dr.'s advice on occasion, it is usually not regarding pharmacology…that said, I would take 10 and put another 20 or so in your bento box just in case
