I read Hamish Carter’s biography on the weekend and he details quite a bit of his training.
What Hamish Carter did in the lead up to Athens Olympics as his key workout around 2 weeks or so out was:
Hard swim
2 hour hilly bike incl 6x hill repeats up a hill more brutal than that on the athens course, then
Run 8x1000 with 60s rest. Think he held around 2.52 or so? He had a couple of training hacks pace him
Another workout he did after that but before olympics was a run of 200m in 32-34seconds, 200m float in 40 or so seconds, repeat 5 times, jog 5 minutes, then repeat it all over again once more
He also used long, easy training to hold his form at various times.
he did swim with swimmers to get faster though. it also seems that when his running was on form that his swim was affected by it…you’ll be pleased to know that tigerchik!
i agree with you, there is no such thing as key workouts… they are all very important and it s a daily thing…
there is session you can mention to impress people but these arent the one that make you a great athlete… it s the very simple daily grind and the 50 minutes easy run is as important as the 8X1000 miles on the track…
