Who’s in?
Wifey and I will be heading down from Central Florida, we’re doing the half. We have a cottage on Whitehead street and are excited about the mini vacation.
The course has changed a few times. The prize money seems to have disappeared. But hey, its the Keys in the middle of winter. What is not to love!
Anyone peaking for this race, any goals at all? Or is it just your excuse to test out the fitness after the Holidays?
I’ll be there for the full for the 2nd time. Loved the race last year so decided to come back. Mostly just racing for the fun of it, and to keep me active in the holiday season and for an excuse to go to Key West in January, plus I like working and helping out at big races and racing at smaller ones.
Trying out any new toys or Christmas gifts?
I will be sporting Swedish goggles for the first time in a race… They were 1.99 from swimoutlet on Black Friday… Woot woot!! They are super clear, so I look forward to enjoying the swim and hopefully seeing a lot of wildlife in the clear water!
I’ll be there, just spending a few days at a college friend’s house and working on the speedo tan, volunteering race morning.
I would say nothing new on raceday, but my powermeter just died so I am going to be riding a brand new Quarq thanks to their excellent warranty and 1 week turnaround time. Some of the best customer service I’ve experienced in a long time.
I will be there as well. This will be my first HIM distance race, so a bit nervous about the distance, but will be taking it slow and easy first time around. Hopefully will be in good enough shape to have some cocktails on Duval after the race.
When you guys leaving?
We are in a little cold snap down here in Florida… 63 on race morning, only warming to 66… But in full sun that should be FAST weather.
Wifey and I leave tomorrow from Orlando w/ a lunch stop in Miami with some friends…
Bike is tuned up and ready to go. Wetsuit has been dusted off. Going to try to get one more race out of some old Newtons. My wife and I have our tri stuff layed out all over the bedroom floor…
ITS TIME TO GO RACING 2014!!!
I’m already here. My friends who live down here were saying last night were saying this is the coldest it’s been since they moved here. I reminded them that there was snow on the ground where I live.
Yes… “Cold” in Key West is a very relative term.
Hows the water? Smooth, Choppy? Temp?
Oh I’m well aware. Even in Virginia, where I live now, I laugh a little how they seem to freak out every time it snows, even though it snows at least a couple times every winter
I just drove by the beach and it looked lake-smooth, and my friend told me he swam in just a speedo last week and was fine. I plan on doing the same, but I’m just here playing around, not actually racing, so I’ll do more swimming at the community college rather than open water over the next few days

I swam at Higgs today in just a speedo. It was fine. It wasn’t the most pleasant thing if I stopped for very long, but while swimming it was more than ok.
The thing I would watch out for is it’s very shallow for a long time there, and there’s rock interspersed with the sandy bottom. The swim exit is a set of stairs too, which could get a little slippery trying to run out.
