Word on the sleepy island of Oahu lately is that the Keauhou Triathlon is in danger of getting cancelled this year because of problems getting equipment from WTC in Kona and the dropouts after losing the IM slots. Anybody out there know the latest facts? Kona people? Would hate to see this race go to the big tri playground in the sky.
Wish I knew. I’ve heard the same thing. I’m not getting my tickets until April just in case.

The last time I spoke with the registration director, the KKT event was still full as anyone withdrawing was replaced with someone still wanting to do the race and names are still on a wait list.
Also, Joe Ackles has had one directors meeting and has four more schedule for the upcomng months. If you check the website, they still sound upbeat and determined to put on the quality event it always has been.
Well I wouldn’t expect one hint of pessimism on their cheerful website until the plug gets pulled. All I know is that my LBS is rife with rumors about local athletes being called by Joe and asked not to withdraw and problems with getting equipment from WTC to run the race.
I am entered in the race also, I spoke to Roch Frey just a moment ago at Multisports.com as they will have a training camp in Kona prior to the race. He said there has only been about a 5% dropout from the loss of IM slots and the race was still a go. There was a waiting list that will fill up the spots. So for now things look good.
Thanks Flytri, that’s good news. I would be surprised if the race doesn’t go on this year, but I wouldn’t bet money on it being around next year with the IM Qualifier going to half-Ironman distance. It’ll be interesting to see what the course is going to be for the IM Qualifier next year – stay north or move back down to Kona?
I called Sherry Bracken in Kona to ask her about the race in May and if it was still a go. She said the WTC wont be providing any of he equipment or facilities although they are still looking forward to putting on a quality race despite the WTC pulling out. She said the race is a go for sure, nice of the WTC to pull out then not even offer anything for a least one more year.
Roch and Huddle were talking about actually racing too, besides doing the camp.

Cathy,
Are you set to do the camp and the race?

No, but it would be fun and I have a number of friends going. I’m doing CaliMan the week prior.
