Do you know the temp and humidity during the race? Those are some terrific times!!!
Yeh, I saw that in the “West Hawaii Today” paper too. Damn wish they were tailwinds but they were NOT.
I heard 93F and I am guessing that humidity was +75%.
I think the temp was hotter than 93F - maybe it was just the black asphalt made it seem considerably hotter.
The journalist who wrote the West Hawaii Today article is the new sports editor and just moved to Kona. This was his first event coverage of any kind. Can’t wait to see how he takes in Ironman. Where he got “fierce tailwinds” I’m not sure. Everyone I talked with had a different report of what the winds were like. Ranged from calm both ways, to calm out with some head wind back, to head winds both ways. It varied from local to visitor, and from where in the field you were. Like Ironman, the earlier you get on the bike course, the later you’ll get hit with the headwinds on the return.
And yes, it was a cooker. The temps Hairy Legs posted seem about right. I’m sure it was worse on the run course where the heat is absorbed into the black asphalt and eminates out.
Eleven Days to Honu!
footballmom,
Simple enough to educate this young journo - put him on a bike on the Queen K on a good Kona day and experience what he authors. Oct 16 gives him enough time to get it right!
See ya in 11 days!
