Is the Keauhou-Kona 1/2 a mass start? Or are there different waves?
Thanks-
It has always been a mass start all of the years I have done it. No reason to believe it will change this year. Plenty of room though, never been too bad.
Aloha,
Larry
One word: Lokelani
Heh Fast Switch (sic), been in any wild threesomes lately?
ahem…aren’t you a married man?
To let you know, I’ll be going to Keauhou on Sunday 5/16 for a hospital fundraiser and will get to see firsthand what the new bypass road looks like (the one that the KKT run course will go on). I’ll post details on it tomorrow afternoon.
I was down at keauhou this morning for a little hospital fundraiser 5K/10K and got a partial idea of what the run course will be like. After the first 5 miles from The Pier to the Keauhou Beach Hotel, you will run up that short, steep hill to the bottom of the shopping center, continue south, down hill into the Pit. The new Bypass Road starts almost at the end of Ali’i Drive, about 1/4 mile short of the end of The Pit. The only part that will be eliminated from the old course that last steep right hand turn towards the ocean before the old turn around. The bypass road continues south and has two amazing hills over the next two miles. You will run about the first two miles of the new Bypass Road, a lot of uphill, then turn around and run down, then climb back out of The Pit and down to the Hotel/finish area.
It was pouring rain this morning when we were there so I can’t say how hot or windless it will be compared to the old favorite Pit, but probably will be very similar.
thanks footballmom,
Do you know if they have gels at the run aid stations? If so, what type?
See ya in 2 weeks.
Mark
PS I figure I cannot taper for this 1/2 IM, because I have only been doing about 5 hours training per week for the last 6 or 7 weeks. Shamefull. Damn, it is going to hurt during and after KKT!
In the past, GU has been a sponsor/supplier of product. I’ll check to be certain what is availabe this year, both gel and liquid, and where. Best rule of thumb is to always be prepared anyway.
Also… it’s been HOT HOT HOT and humid on the Big Island the past week. DOn’t forget those mesh hats and suncreen SPF 100!
Thanks.
Been hot and humid in Honolulu this past week too. No doubt Kona weather.
why
Sorry, accidently pushed “POST” too soon.
Why did the run course change slightly?
The bike course changed which changed the transition area which changed the run course. Cycling down Ali’i Drive the last five miles to T2, with Memorial Weekend traffic, was getting scary so the director moved T2 to The pier, where T1 is. The bike course had to be extended on Queen Kaahumanu Highway, past Waikoloa to make up for this change. Now the run starts at The Pier instead of five miles further down Ali’i Drive so it has been extended on the new Bypass Road because going down to the The Pit wouldn’t have been far enough. Does this make sense?
In regards to gels on the course I just got this off of the KKT website:
“Aid stations on the run course are located approximately every mile and will offer cola, Gatorade, water, ice, sponges, bananas, oranges, and cookies. In addition, HammerGel is providing the most popular HammerGel flavors at three points on the run course: Â at the bike/run transition at Kailua Pier, near the Lyman’s Surf Spot a couple of miles south of the pier on Alii Drive, and at the aid station at the entrance to Hokulia Bypass Road (which you will pass twice). The HammerGel flavors will include apple cinnamon and raspberry (these two will be the most abundant) plus some orange, vanilla, banana, and espresso.”
Thanks for the intel. I was wondering if we were going to “miss” the traditional pain of suffering of the pit with the new run course but now it sounds like we will get more for our money – wooo hooo! The pit squared!
Speaking of Lokelani (heh I can look at the menu without eating at the restaurant, right?), I got some intel over the weekend which indicates she is a single woman these days – one of the guys in the swimsuit edition got dumped as her boyfriend! I will remain discrete as to who the unlucky fellow is.
The T2 change is a good thing. One year I got behind a LARGE group of Harleys on their Memorial Day Weekend ride. A Police officer actually had me stop to let about 50 Harleys get in front of me! I then got to follow them all the way through town on Alii Drive because there was no room to pass. I was not a happy person that year.
Everyone knows that a Cervelo P3 is faster than a Harley, right? :~)
Aloha,
Larry
footballmom,
Great info. thanks
Only wish I had trained more. I am alreadfy feeling the pain. Such is life.
“I then got to follow them all the way through town on Alii Drive because there was no room to pass.”
Drafting violation Larry. I think you set this up with your HOG friends.
Was Diane on the back of your P3 in leather?
Mark
Leather mini skirt, crotchless panties and halter top. :~) If you don’t believe me just ask her this Saturday (then stand back) :~))
Got new FSA K Force cranks Saturday. I must be faster now!
Aloha,

Larry,
What clipless pedals do you use?
I am looking for some new ones - my first pair is/was SPD-R. Won’t buy them again.
Mark
I have tried most of them but have been using Speedplay for quite a while now. Lots of float but no big problem.
Aloha,
Larry
ah…I was thinking of purchasing SPEEDPLAY Zero’s.
