Subaru Outback in front of me got in a head-on with a guy in a Prius. Prius went off the road to his right (into a dirt pullout), over corrected and came all the way across into our (on coming) lane and collided with the Subaru. I made an evasive maneuver, but really I wasn’t hit just because of pure luck (for lack of a better word).
I got out of my truck to check on the occupant(s) of the Subaru when I noticed flames coming from what was the engine area. I yanked opened the door, asked the lady if she was ok (she said she was fine) and told she should get out because her car was on fire. She undid her belt and attempted to get but couldn’t get up. I picked her up and carried her (wedding day “threshold” style to the Sid of the road and called 911.
I think she may have broken her pelvis and collar bone (from the seat belt) and her was swollen.
The Prius dude got of his car and called someone (a friend?) and then just fucking passed out right in the middle of the highway 1.
No idea. It was at a curve in the road. Could’ve speed, texting, etc. I really don’t know.
Hard to believe speed and Prius could have been the culprit. My bet is on Inattention due to device. I’ve started driving my jeep rather than truck and most days the doors are off. You really learn what your highway/ street neighbors are up to without doors. Based on experience I’d venture that 85% are typing some form of message. It’s scary.
Dammit. I keep a crowbar, fire extinguisher, first aid kit, and CPR mask in my car for just such events, but I’m still like the only person I know who hasn’t pulled someone out of a burning vehicle.

There you go. I keep a bag o’shit just in case it is needed by me other another. Years ago some dude was test driving his wannabe reconditioned muscle mobile when the engine caught a bad case of the flames. People were slowing down to be nosey and stare (fucking annoying) so I pulled over, handed him a fire extinguisher then walked back to car. Those same nosey asses applauded as if I did something special. People need to help one another and be prepared for the unthinkable.

Like I said, it’s where the road curves. The speed limit is 55 (most are going 65ish) and the curve can’t safely be taken at that speed so you have to slow down. So it’s possible that speed was a factor.
My first sight of the Prius was it being off the road in the dirt, going sideways and headed toward us (me and the Subaru).
Sure, it is possible or even likely that he was using his phone but I did not see that so I just don’t know.
For those who know the area, it was on Hwy 1 (I was north bound) just passed Mugu beach where the hwy bends inland. The Prius was south bound, off the road in the pullout, out of control, where people sometimes park looking toward Mugu Naval Base.
The Prius driver was lucky in a few ways…
Nobody was riding a bike in his path.
Nobody was parked in the pullout.
He hit a Subaru instead of me in my Chevy Silverado with 1000 lbs of tools in it.
I left a can of Fix-a-Flat on a car out in the hospital parking lot once, when I was getting out if work late at night, and noticed that it had a flat tire. I found out later on, though, that the car belonged to someone I don’t like who works down on the psyche ward.
