Just had appendix removed. What is my training prognosis?

I just got home from the hospital. It did not rupture and everything went smoothly (still sucks though). I’m signed up for IMAZ and am looking to hopefully get a sample of folks out there who can give me their personal recovery experiences.
Thanks,

Jason

I had mine out 24 hrs after my A race of the season…
I was walking laps of the hospital within the first day of it being out (much to the nurses chagrin). I recall being 3 or 4 days out and convincing my sister it would be a great idea to do a 3k walk. She was skeptical, but off we went. Well, it was fine, but then I came home and slept for 4 hrs.
I laid low for 2 weeks. No bending/lifting/sweeping/mopping (if you hate chores, now’s the time to enjoy)/swimming, etc. But after that I was feeling pretty good. I started back to work (I was in a kitchen at the time so it was all physical stuff) and also started biking, very lightly and slowly. I’d hold the elbow pads of my aerobars to make sure I didn’t bend over too much and just slowly built up. Before I got back to running I also began speed walking. I know, it’s lamo but it was quite beneficial. I had a friend learning to run, so she ran and I just walked quickly beside her. It was a workout for me just coming back but prevented the jostling motion.
1 month post surg, I’d slowly and cautiously built up to 55k riding 10k running in a day. I went completely based on how I felt and was incredibly cautious of my stomach.
Just take it easy for sure in the first few weeks and then build up from there. I know I went at things a tad too aggressively coming back from it,but I was also monitoring how I felt very closely.

Best of luck. Keep us posted.

Not my personal experience, but 6 days after an appy (before laparoscopy), Jeff Ferrell qualified for the US Olympic relay team for the 2 x 200, and went on to win a gold medal in Rome, 1960. Irony: he was the fastest US sprinter, hands down that year, but refused the opportunity to try an qualify with a faster time for individual events. He’s now another “inspiring old guy” story:

As an MD who does ocassional appys, I doubt it’s a good idea to do any strenuous activity for a minimum of 10-14 days after surgery. IM AZ is 12 weeks away; with your surgeon’s advice, you should be able to get in enough training prior to that to race with honor. But the last thing you want to do is pop that stitch off the colon where the appendix was removed.

You’re fine. Take it easy, then get back.

Broke my collarbone 12 weeks out from IMAZ last year. You’re better off. Heal, then get back
to training. 2-3 weeks off is better now than 6 weeks from now.

Listen to your Dr’s, but let them know what you do.

In 2001 I had the surgery on the 11th and raced on the 14th. I think you can be on the bike, possibly run, but not the water until the wound heals.

Good luck.
