Actually, with the end of the 100/100 thread, I was just starting to miss the debate on running multiple times in one day.
I do run commutes 2-3 times per week, and find that it’s a relatively painless way to increase training volume, time wise. My usual route is just over 4 1/2 miles to work, with the first half being a long climb that gets steepest just before the top. I take a different route home and extend it a little bit, so it’s generally just over six miles, mostly relatively flat. I almost always do these runs at a fairly easy pace.
Several of the days on which I do this are relatively long shifts of 12 1/2 hours, which can be somewhat physically strenuous when things are busy. (I’m an x-ray and CT tech, and my typical day involves lots of moving patients, and several miles of walking, frequently pushing wheelchairs and stretchers.) So here’s my question: Is there any particular training advantage to setting out on a run when you are very physically fatigued?
To be truthful, I’m just asking this out of curiosity, because I’m probably not going to change this part of my routine anyway. Also, I am aware of the importance of a long run and some faster running in my schedule, and do try to include them.
