Just cant dial in my p3c....qrings or wipperman to blame?

tried everything…new cable…new housing…cassete is new…replaced derauillur…has to be new wipperman stainless(maybe i should use d/a chain instead…my qrings could be problem(tension varies w the up and down movement)…could try putting d/ace rotor back on? any insight?

It would help us to guess if we had an idea of what symptom you are trying to alleviate.

I’m guessing you can’t get the indexed shifting to work correctly. Let me guess further - it works at the bottom end or at the top end, but as you get further away from either end, the indexing gets worse and worse.

If this is correct - you have probably attached the rear der cable incorrectly. The little tab on the “washer” on the screw does not go to the outside of the bike, rather it goes on the cassette side, and it retains the cable, in a straight line out of the cable housing.

Just making this tiny little error accounts for the indexer moving just a tiny bit farther than it should with each click, explaining why it works at one end, and not the other.

If this wasn’t it - give us more info.

no we got that rite…we just have a slight pause in shifting…ussaully in the midddle gears…reaer cassette…shift(click) then 3 sewconds later it shifts…this thing is touchy
.

Simplify your life and use the friction setting.

Know what - I have that same exact “symptom” after switching to a wipperman about a month ago. It is a much smoother drivetrain, but in the middle gears, it does definitely take a few moments longer to upshift. Downshifting occurs swiftly, but regardless of adjustment, upshifting is a tiny fraction slower - annoying but not really troublesome. its more of a “tick, tick, tick, shift” than a “tick, shift”. And if I say so myself, I’m pretty good with bike mechanicals.

wheres gary tingley the q ring guy?

if its sluggish on the up and quick on the down, then balance with the adjustment screw.

If its sluggish both sides equally, then clean and lube the bottom cable guide at the bottom bracket (sticky sports drink, sweat, grime, etc). Better yet, use a small piece of teflon (like nokons) housing that goes up into the down tube over the cable guide and back a couple of inches towards the RD. It will decrease the friction substantially.

Lastly, make sure that your cables don’t criss cross in the down tube.

That’s all I can think of on stuff that has worked for me - E

i just replaced all cable housings…the guide underneath is perfect

I’m all over that, but this just isn’t working like normal. I know when it is sluggish in one direction which way to turn the adjuster barrel. In this case, and only since I switched to the wipperman - as soon as I get it perfect in one orientation, it is sluggish in the other. With my D/A chains I never had that issue. In fact, I’m going to switch back tonight for test purposes. Will report back.

the Wipperman chains shift like crap, that’s the problem. It’s even worse with the new DA shifters, almost to the point of not working once you get to the 2-tooth jumps.

No to blame the wipperman, but we have noticed that the combination with the Q-Rings is less than idea. the issues is that the Wipperman links are more rectangular as opposed to figure 8 like, so they do not shift as well. My guess is that they will work fine when you go back to a DA or something else.

I’ll keep an eye out on here, but feel free to contact me if you have any other issues,

Try a shimano 105 chain. Also, if you do use wipperman, I wouldn’t use the stainless. Softer than the nickel and more prone to breaking based on what I’ve read…

shimano chain is what the mechanic said
find it hard to believe wipperman at 90.00 wouldnt work…wonder what would happen if i put my d ace rotor back on?

Are you using a connex link? You can install them upside down. That will cause some shifting issues at the bottom.

i suppose i am…all wipperm s have them?..i did notice a faint knock every revolution in the lowest gear climbing a steep hill this am…but i havent tried the bike today since i put the new 7800 deraullur on this am(which by the way helped immensely…although the old derauillur only had 14k miles on it}
.

qrings to blame…put on shimano chain …nothing…put d a rotor back on-perfect,finally after using the q rings for 3yrs…sure looks nice w
d ace rotor…wonder if ill miss qrings?

I have Q Rings on my P3C and no trouble at all.

Shimano chain, the one that came with the bike. Something else is going on, it’s not the rings

I had the same problem on my road bike and turned out to be the washer for the cassette was the wrong one. Mechanic changed to another spacer and works like a charm.

Hello swaco and All,

I have Q rings on my P3C - SRAM chain http://willyoumaketheleap.com/

Dura Ace cassette and derailleur.

Shifts just fine. Had a problem once but it was a sticky derailleur cable.

Cheers,

Neal
