Just because I know someone is sitting on the fence

I know this won’t apply to many (always placing those ultra seeds!) but Jorge just sent me an email if anyone is even REMOTELY interested in going this year, get those apps in…times awasting–and if you need a cram/survival method, I have one  after all there is a 6 day cut-off. This is the ideal triathlon camp (in more ways than one!!) btw…I am NOT planning on a crew, so I know it can be done the old fashioned way.

Relalistically–this race is the distance many cover in training/week they just aren’t aware of it.

You have GOT to be kidding.

I went to Monterrey in '01 to watch a crazy Russian friend do the double iron race. But a quintuple on that course!!?? no way.

for any that might consider it, please note that the swim is in a 50 m pool, so do practice your flip turns. and the bike and run are both on the same loop of asphalt in a smallish city park and note that said loop of aphalt is less than a mile long (advantage: an aid station every mile. disadvantage: you will remember every crack and hole in the pavement for the next 20 years of your life).

Thank you so much!!! Now I have seen it all. But why stop at the quintuple? I see there is a Deca-Iron race planned for 2006.

Truly, I wish you the best in your endeavor. Not that I have any experience with anything longer than an Ironman (and I think that was plenty) but I would suggest eating…continually. Please let us know how it goes.

Bernie

I think that I know why there are no races like this in the US…cause here the men in white suits and padded rooms may show up to pick up any one who enters…in any case…best of luck…an old friend of mine did Deca IronMan…now that is nuts…(he only did that when he was not training or doing RAAM).

I’ve done the Deca in Hawaii–and even finished :-). I am ready to go back in 06, the format will be easier in that it is 10 in 10. 10 irons in 10 days. Still the same distance, just a different animal all together, no blowing out of the shoulders for 18 freakin hours on day one. I would link you to my rr, but I removed them on all sites for various reasons.

I am actually awake tonight…first round of sleep deprivation training and I forgot how painful this was…worse than exercising–so not looking forward to tomorrow nights rendition.

I put this up not because I am racing but more because of the different emails that hit my desk --there are several that ask me on a regular basis about these races. My goal is to just go have fun and get the base back in–I AM shooting for exactly 5 days and 23 hrs and 59mins. Seriously, thats my game plan, and to enjoy my favorite people in the World: Beat, VIncenzo and Arthur (and a few others not sure if they are going yet). The Deca next year will be for racing, and yes I am already signed up again. I have never been more moved in my life by SOMEONE else’s performance than last year towards the end of my race, I want to see/feel that again.

The tight loops actually are extremely comfortable around day 3. The nightmares lasted a full 2 weeks. I would wake up thinking I still had to run, that was sick. The tight loops makes the distance WAY doable. I can’t explain it, it is something you have to experience. But driving afterwards, man now THAT is scary.

you mean driving IN mexico? or driving TO mexico? are you are driving there?!?

can you really “train” yourself for sleep deprivation? is there a manual on how to do this ? this sounds like a myth.

Greg…

I don’t know if it is a myth or not…but I have trained it for myself (and not just typical sleep dep stuff, set-up like I use during my events). It has worked for me. I even go so far as to put my running shoes on for 3 straight days to get the feet used to it. Does it work? I don’t have trouble now during the ultras like I used to…and I don’t get the opportunity to get hallucinations, kinda bummed about that one. I train how I race, and that includes middle of the night training. I know I was one of the few that did not have to ice my feet down during the run, I attribute it to me being comfortable with the burning sensation of my shoes. I felt that ALL during training and so when it happened during the race, I wasn’t even phased. Train how you race

Going to fly into Monterray…was planning on driving until others warned me against it. Just driving home from the airport last year after HI I totally freaked out behind the wheel in rush hour traffic. I had to pull over and have someone come get me. I think what was so hard was moving so slow for so long and not being in a moving vehicle. It was totally weird.

I wonder if your Russian friend is the guy I race with in Europe? Really sweet man (can’t think of his name right now…something that rhymes with Smirnoff…siminov maybe?) about 5’7/8 and carries his bike in a garmet bag, very little English and FAST?

you have got to be kidding…!

you know Alexander (also sometimes known as ‘Sasha’ to Russian speakers) Simonov?!?

yes, that is his height and he does have a funky russian-style “bike bag”. do you just race against him or actually talk with him a bit? i think he did at least one ultra outside of Russia, in Austria. some kind of european ultra tri championship?

wow, very small world…

did you do the double in Monterrey in 2001?

Greg…thanks for keeping my mind active  this is the hour I ALWAYS have trouble with…juiced on caffeine right now, and its not helping, just raced heart–going to have to get on my bike soon.

IT IS ALEXANDER!!! LOve him! I actually massaged him in Austria before our race and then in Lensahn he asked me to work on him and I said no way, I needed to rest. I have raced with Alexander at both the double in Austria in 03 and the triple in Lensahn in 04. Planned on going to Austria this year and busted my foot. Going next year I think to maybe both the races in Austria (graduation present to myself  ) I know he will be at one of them. He does Lithuania, and I just can’t push that time limit envelope just yet. He is a MACHINE! When I saw him in Lensahn last year, I thought he was going to the Deca, but then he didn’t show :frowning:

I do not keep in touch with him…I don’t speak Russian. I am just working on my German words for my trip next year.

He is the only guy I have witnessed during a double just really hammering it and DENYING water. I watched his crew do everything they could to get him to drink. I even pleaded with him, and it just didn’t work. He usually finishes top 3-5. Simply amazing!

first trip to Mexico…looking forward to it. I like the double, but prefer the mind game of the triple and really think the quintuple is going to suite my strengths. The entire time during the deca I kept thinking how much fun half of it would be. VERY happy to hear it is a 50m pool, I was told it was a 25m indoor.

Now I go ride

well, in monterrey, it may be a 25 m pool now. it was a 50 m in 2001. so i guess be ready for whatever pool they have…

that is truly amazing that you know Alexander somewhat. if you want his email, let me know. and another question for you: where is lensahn?

thanks for the stories. good luck with the training!
