Any thoughts??

Yes. I better start booking flights and hotel.

Jim is a really good guy and really hard working for the Tri Community in Colorado.

Big step in management from a Sprint and Olympic to a Full.

I hope it goes off.

Very cool, but I absolutely hate tri websites that don’t clearly reveal where the race is located.

Reading through it and clicking around I would guess aurora, colorado but I am not 100% confident.

When new events come up I check how easy they are to travel to from Chicago. Florida is a prime example – Panama City Beach EASIER vs. Miami HARDER.

It’s about time… I can’t believe that the IM, excuse me the NA Sports crew has not put one together in their own backyard as of yet. The 5430 1/2 pulls in about 900 so you would have to quess that a full would pull a good turnout, but maybe not 2000+ like an IM event, but that might be a good thing.

Can we call ourselves IRONMAN if we complete this … or just rattlesnakers???

Cool. The altitude difference is going to be interesting, though.

You’re right, with people’s love affair with Boulder, I have no doubt they could fill an IM here in CO without much trouble at all.

if it’s out by where they hold the rattlesnake events, which are great events, it’s “only” about 5000ft

 More importantly, what will the tattoo look like???

You get your tongue split and tattooed after the race :).

Thinking about this a bit more… For Years, in September, Darrin with Racing Underground has been putting on the Harvest Moon Half. It would make a lot of sense if Jim and Darrin combined efforts and added a second loop to the each leg of the Half to come up with a Full. The course is OK, but the out and back run -twice- would be a bit boring.

I don’t know that this would be possible as part of the half ironman course is on I-70. The only reason they get away with that is because all cyclists ore off the interstate by late morning. I would think the liability risk would be too great to have cyclists on a major highway the majority of the day. Keep in mind that it’s not closed, even for Harvest Moon. You only get that narrow shoulder for that 9 mile section. Could get a bit dicey. I’ll be in Aurora for the Rattlesnake Olympic distance race tomorrow so I’ll see what they mean when they say they are “working” to bring the IM distance event to Colorado.

You’re right about the I-70 thing, but maybe they could get creative with the length of the other legs.

Good luck this weekend, and give us a report. I’m sure they will be asked.

Or as posted in the LR, for men maybe this would be an option http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=61yasm0

Warning not work friendly…

Any thoughts??

Yes, a few.

Like most independent iron distance races it will get a good amount of press the first year and some pretty decent participants, maybe 200ish, then each year the numbers will gradually decline and the race will be defunct in 3-5 years time or risk going bankrupt.

They tried this with the 5430 and that didn’t succeed… what makes them think it will work this time?

I say this as someone who has participated in 6 independent irons, enjoys them and wishes this attempt much success but once again would bet money vs. it being profitable enough to stand the test of time.

Much as I hate to say it - I agree. It is a shame in a way…but the fact is I do M-Dot races cause they are a race and even more so, they are an event.

I agree I can’t see this thing working, particularly if they are out in Aurora for the event. That area is absolutely void of humanity so there would be no support for the race at all, and what a mind-numbingly boring course. I have done two Rattlesnake events and while they are well run the location is terrible. I agree that a Boulder or Denver based IM race could do better than the 5430 full did, but its gotta be in a location where there is population, scenery, etc. IMO, the 5430 full could have done better under the leadership of Barry Siff who bought the name and half IM a couple years back.
