June Lake Cycling routes/suggestions

Ill be heading up to a family members cabin on the lake from the 8th-11th. Anyone know a good site for routes/maps. Or is anyone in the area that would like to meet up for some rides?

Obviously looking for some hilly stuff that would take up 4-5+ hours of my day.

Anything useful would be appreciated.

Thanks, Nick

I was out there once. It is very hilly and high altitude. I don’t know the area very well, but I believe there is a loop around June lake that might be something like 20 miles. I rode from Mammoth Lakes up 395 (very fast traffic but mostly wide shoulder) to June Lake when I was out there. I would think if you did a June Lake loop and then rode down to Mammoth and around that area (if you head up past the ski resort from 395 you can pick up about 3000’ of climbing) and back it would be a pretty solid ride.

google the mammoth century loop.

also, if you go south on 395, just past the airport on the left is an old green church. that road goes out a long way. starts flat but then rolls and has sustained climbs. i think that’s the century loop but have only gone out-and-back on it - last time i did a little over 40 miles with 5k+ of climbing.

Funny, I was going to mention the Green Church road. The day I rode that there was a sustained 20mph wind at my back heading east. Needless to say, the return trip was rough. I believe that is the road where Ryan Hall and crew often do their tempo runs. Also, you can check out http://www.mammothweb.com/recreation/index.cfm for info on running, riding, and swimming.

the June lake loop is a great place to ride. you can also take the 395 south to mammoth lakes and that part of the highway isn’t to busy and much more scenic than the 395 south of the 203 (mammoth turn off). on return trip to June lake you will go over Dead Man Summit topping out at 8000 + ft. about a 2 mile climb. or as others have stated take the green church road (also referred to as Crowley lake loop and road to Benton.) very smooth road with very little traffic. go as far as Benton crossing with many steep climbs including Watersen grade at 8500ft. about five miles long. lastly take the Scenic cut off from the 395 and ride to Mammoth Mtn. Inn at 9000 ft. anthony

Don’t forget right around town. The ride up to Minaret Vista above Mammoth ski area is a nice climb from town (but only 15 miles RT, 7.5 up. 7.5 down  ). You can also ride down the otehr side into the San Joaquin River Basin, but the road is pretty narrow and twisty, with some big busses on it… I know people do it but I don’t think I would. You can also take 203 out through town up to Lake Mary/George/Horseshoe area, and ride around the lakes. Also narrow roads but no cliff on one side

Duh, just realized you said June not Mammoth lakes… But if you do find yourself in town…

The June Lake Loop + 395 is the route for the June Lake Tri as well (clockwise)

Google the Everest Challenge–it’s a 2 day climbing fest with each day having a difficult climb and descent followed by an easier climb and descent, followed by a ball breaking climb and total climbing ends up being the elevation of Mt Everest. It’s right in the area although a little way from June Lake. You want climbs–you’re in the Eastern Sierras, just ride up.
