Julian & Gel Magic Racer's

Julian,

A quick question for you if I can? I read a post by you that you were slowly getting down to lighter shoes, and bought a pair of Asic Gel Majic Racer’s. How do you like these shoes? I have had some ITBS problems and am a supinator, I am learning to run more on the balls of my feet, and trying to go with lighter shoes. Can you give an update on these shoes, and if you are running in them now, and if you will continue to run in them when you need new shoes.

Thanks-

I was looking at buying these shoes to give a try also. A podiatrist told me to get them, I would be interested in an opinion also.

Good memory! I like the way the shoes feel when running, but I think they have a design flaw. They have a hard plastic insert in the sole, at the bridge/arch area. While it looks like that plastic bit would not strike the ground, it does as soon as the shoes are broken in. It ended up clicking-clacking down the road, and pebbles would get stuck in it. The nice cushioning of the shoes would quickly go away when they got broken in because the plastic insert would strike the ground. They are probably better suited for a lighter runner. I’m 155 and maybe just too heavy for those shoes.

I went through two pairs and went back to the Mizuno Precision, with which I am exceedingly happy. I have a pair of 11’s that I use with my orthotics, and 10.5’s that I use without the orthotics. I race and do my faster runs without orthotics.

I am also prone to under-pronation, and I stay away from any sort of “support” shoe. BTW – I certainly don’t land on the balls of my feet (nobody does at middle-distance and longer, despite what Romanov says). I think that I land “lightly” on the outer heel and roll quickly to the midfoot. I take a little extra care to make sure my big toe comes down flat to the ground so that I avoid running on the outside of my foot.

Julian,

Have you tried the Asic DS Trainer? I like these shoes, however I am wondering if the small amount of stability they offer will cause me to roll out in them on the run?

Every now and then I get tempted to try other shoes (my neighbor owns a running shoe store). The last “small amount of stability” shoe I tried was New Balance 900. I swear, it felt like I was running on cement in bare feet. I’ve not tried the DS Trainer.

I think I’ve sworn off for good any shoes that even hint at stability or motion control.
