Joseph Smith - The First Hugh Hefner

“The Mormon church has admitted for the first time that its founder, Joseph Smith, took multiple wives. In an essay published on its website, the church said “careful estimates” put the number at between 30 and 40, including a 14-year-old and others …”

All this before Viagra too.

You don’t need viagra with 40 different ones. It’s well known in biology and is called the “Coolidge Effect”.

Behavioral endocrinologist Frank A. Beach first mentioned the term “Coolidge effect” in publication in 1955, crediting one of his students with suggesting the term at a psychology conference. He attributed the neologism to:
… an old joke about Calvin Coolidge when he was President … The President and Mrs. Coolidge were being shown around an experimental government farm. When came to the chicken yard she noticed that a rooster was mating very frequently. She asked the attendant how often that happened and was told, “Dozens of times each day.” Mrs. Coolidge said, “Tell that to the President when he comes by.” Upon being told, the President asked, “Same hen every time?” The reply was, “Oh, no, Mr. President, a different hen every time.” President: “Tell that to Mrs. Coolidge.”

You mean that the guy who founded the whole thing was a conman with a bullshit story? One of those things where you read it and can’t believe anyone but a small child would fall for it.

Do you have a link to this “news” story?

My father in law converted to LDS about 10 years ago (long story) and the folks at his temple have been open about JS and his polygamy at least since then.

I had no idea that this was a “secret”.

One of the funniest things about ol’ JS is the leadership of his “church” set up a banking con that transferred the assets of the followers into the pockets of a few insiders. After that most of the flock deserted him, but some of the true idiots kept the faith. It is like the scammed continuing to believe in Bernie Madoff. Joseph Smith then fled the state of Ohio to avoid an arrest warrant. Of course according to official Mormon teachings, staying one step ahead of the law, which Smith frequently had to do, is an example of persecution of the Mormons.

But but but 40+ wives? Today that would be hell. Back then, you were a king.

That Pic is Brigham young. And none of this is remotely new news. Uncertain why it is being reported as such.

You’re an anti mormonite.

dang, those prophets of god all look alike
.

A few years ago I read “Under the Banner of Heaven” by Jon Krakauer. I enjoyed a few of hsi other books so I decided to read this one.

It was a very interesting read about the Mormon religion.

The book made it sound like he was “told by God” to take multiple wives as a way to cover up his adulterous behavior.

It was also interesting reading about Warren Jeffs. This was a couple of years before he made news here in TX. I guess we are less excepting in TX of 12 year old wives than Utah is.
