… after being hit in the calf with a pitched ball.
He hit the catcher in the back of the head, and the pitcher in the hand resulting in a possible broken finger.
Here’s what I don’t get … it’s assault if he uses a bat, but not if he uses his fist? I admit, I don’t understand why fighting in sports in not assault, but fighting in the stands is?
Is there some type of clause that excludes fighting in sports from being claimed as assault? Or does one of those involved have to press charges?
Here’s what I don’t get … it’s assault if he uses a bat, but not if he uses his fist?
Why isn’t it assault if a pitcher deliberately throws a baseball at the batter? Not really a serious question, but I would answer that we have determined lines of “acceptable” behavior and egregious breaches of that behavior are not tolerated, like the hockey player (don’t remember who) slashing the other guy’s face but normal fighting is A-OK.
Look how his head is still and focused on the target. I’d prefer his front foot already be on the ground allow for proper, forceful hip rotation. I agree, his opened up too ealry, he’ll never make solid contact with the pitcher’s head if it’s low and away.
The high hands is a key.
Somebody please tell the pitcher to try and block the bat with HIS GLOVE HAND! … and good grief, how long did the first baseman decide to wait before he ran over there? He must be from Stanford (i.e., smart).
The proper technique for the pitcher is to throw the glove at the batter, causing him to raise his hands protectively, and then tackle low; preferably around the knees.
The pitcher should have used the Dennis Martinez technique - I remember a game years ago when the Red Sox were down in Baltimore and Martinez had just given up a home run and then drilled George Scott (who was huge) with the next pitch. Scott charged the mound and Martinez turned and sprinted to the outfield.
I think Martinez is the only one I’ve ever seen do that. Most usually stand their ground at the mound or maybe throw their glove first as someone mentioned above. Nolan Ryan had probably the best technique against Robin Ventura - sidestepping him and then grabbing him in a headlock and getting a few noggin shots in before everyone else piled on.
The scary thing about the Offerman deal is that FRICKEN CARL EVERETT was the peacemaker.
Don’t forget Kyle Fransworth’s beatdown of Paul Wilson. Couldn’t find video of it, but here’s a good description I found. And this is no exaggeration whatsoever, it went down EXACTLY as described …
Paul Wilson, meet Kyle Farnsworth
If you thumbed through the entire pitcher register of Total Baseball, Kyle Farnsworth might just be the last hurler you’d want to charge the mound against in the game’s history.
Not only did he play college football, but at 6-foot 4, 240 pounds, he’s roughly Lawrence Taylor’s size. He’s also mean and throws 100 miles an hour.
But none of that stopped Reds pitcher Paul Wilson from charging Farnsworth after the reliever blazed a fastball under his chin. Now Wilson is no Stu Miller or Pedro Martinez when it comes to body mass — he’s 6-foot-5, 235 pounds — but that didn’t seem to make much of a difference when he charged Farnsworth.
Farnsworth didn’t wait for Wilson to reach the mound, meeting him about halfway between the rubber and the plate. With a form that would have made Bill Parcells proud, Farnsworth got lower than Wilson, wrapped his arms and drove his shoulder into his midsection, stopping Wilson in his tracks. Farnsworth finished off the tackle by lifting Wilson off his feet and body-slamming him to the ground. Once there, Farnsworth got in a few punches on the suddenly-helpless Wilson who had to be immediately regretting his decision. When the players were finally pulled apart, Wilson’s face and uniform were bloody and he’d earned himself a five-game suspension on top of a humiliating beatdown. (Farnsworth got three games, a small price to pay for establishing yourself as one of the baddest dudes in the league.)
I appreciate Jose’s conviction. Too often today batters jaw at the pitcher about what they should do…“I’m gonna kick your ass!..You don’t think I’ll do it?” as they walk down to 1st base or slowly walk towards the mound so that the catcher/umpires have time to intercede. Not Jose. That Man meant business.
The scary thing about the Offerman deal is that FRICKEN CARL EVERETT was the peacemaker.
I remember his mid-game meltdown at Fenway when he got tossed for arguing a called strike and head-butted the umpire with the bill of his helmet. It took a few teammates and coaches to restrain him and get him towards the dugout, and along the way he shoved his own teammate Bret Saberhagen and challenged him as well and screamed loud enough for fans sitting near the dugout to hear for everyone to get the &^%* away from him and leave him alone. He also had a clubhouse fight with Darren Lewis, who was widely regarded as one of the nicest guys in the game, that took most of the rest of the team to break up.
Because watching baseball players fight is funny and no one really gets hurt. It’s usually a bunch of slapping and rolling around. They feel like they are not men because of the sport they play so they bitch fight. This guy used a bat because he feels that his penis is too small and was bored.
I say let the players and the fans fight all they want and thin out the herd.
Most usually stand their ground at the mound or maybe throw their glove first as someone mentioned above.
Most usually just back-pedal and yell for their catcher to hurry up.
My best friend was the 1st baseman. He knew he’d better move his ass and get to the mound before the batter did, or I’d put Nair on his eyebrows when he was asleep or something just as bad.
HB,
The scary thing about the Offerman deal is that FRICKEN CARL EVERETT was the peacemaker.
You said carl everett and Peacemaker in the same sentence. Hey look in the sky at that big-arse asteroid heading right for us.
Don’t forget Kyle Fransworth’s beatdown of Paul Wilson.
That was frickin beautiful. What was Wilson thinking?
Because watching baseball players fight is funny and no one really gets hurt.
name one non-fighting sport where the players actually throw punches and someone ends up getting hurt. It cracks me up to see NFL players talking smack and push-fighting IN FULL PADS! There some pretty good fights in most sports. The vast majority are broken up quickly.
What do you mean “get hurt”. I watch MMA quite a bit and I see guys take a bunch of shots, get KO’d and seem fine 5 minutes later. Again, what defines “get hurt” b/c there isn’t time for a guy to sit on another chest and hammer him with 5 forearm blasts. You get time for maybe one shot, and guys usually load up and overthrow the punch. PLus, us handsome pitchers are usually abile enough to execute the very clever, slide step, as the rest of our teammates pile on. A buddy of mine gave fine advice on what to do in a sports fight. “Find someone on the other team you know and wrestle.”
Tibbs, FYI, when you make a fist the thumb goes on the outside. Alright? =)
