Jonnyo --- YOU RULE! (now tell us about your tire setup)

"the 808 with disc cover is the best disc in the world…faster than anything else… it s amazing… i would not ride a clincher zipp disc instead of my cover…high quality clincher tire with a latex tube feel better than anyting else i have ever experience…and faster. "

So you rode clincher 808’s, yes? I’m interested in the tube/tire setup, so a few questions.

What tires did you run?
What latex tubes did you use (brand, model)?
What PSI?

I imagine you got the cover from Wheelbuilder. Any problems with it on the bike, or was the fit perfect and flawless.

i use the 808 clinchers yes, with zipp tangente tire and michelin latex tube 18-20. very hard to put well without pinching but when it s in… it s fast! 120 psi.

the wheel cover on a 808 is perfect, i do tape the transition between cover and rim with black electrical tape so it s smoother. The cover never came lose or noisy… i m not sure if the cover would work as wheel on different rim but my quess is… on a 404 or 808, it s the way to go, it s a way nicer ride than a normal disc in my opinion.

Thanks, I was just about to order a cover for my 404’s so I was curious how you enjoyed it. Did you run the 18-20 tube inside a 23mm or thinner? Again, just curious.

Congrats again on a great day.

the best tire for zipp is a 21mm… so if you get a zipp tire(tangente) it will be a 21mm with a 18-20 latex tube. i know Jens and rappstar know a lot more about different tires options… i just took jens recommendation for me and it as work out pretty well, i like the way to tire feels like.

and also another silly point, the giro advantage 2 is awsome but it s even better if you tape the back part of the helmet underneat the tail… i did that also…

dude - did you even sleep yet? You need to rest for the post-race party!
, but i guess you’re on cloud 839 still =)

Do you mean that you taped the hollow part in the back? The part that would rest against your back? Interesting.

Sounds like you took care of all the fine details in order to go fast…very smart. You’re a thinking man’s triathlete!

Thanks for the info!

If I might ask, what base bar were you using on the new bike?

This is the exact setup I have, and have been recommending it to people.

Where are you guys finding the 18-20 latex tubes. Slightly lower rr vs the larger tube, right? Any other substantial differences?

I mail-ordered a dozen a couple years ago. I forget where, but they’re out there. I’m not certain about the Crr difference. I just use that size out of habit as much as anything else.

I guess you have a changed your mind on disc covers since this post http://forum.slowtwitch.com/gforum.cgi?post=1340992.

Or perhaps it was a strategic move to keep me off your tail yesterday, LOL. right.

why is this better than riding a straight up disc wheel? Asking out of ignorance, not to be an *ss.

Jonnyo,

We want pics…!!! Show us what u did with the underside. Did u also leave a small opening at the very end of the helmet like the Spuik…? What kinda tape…? Clear packing tape…? Duct Tape or cardboard…?

There are threads in the forum archive showing his education regarding the disc covers. Jonnyo spent a fair amount of time talking with Jens and Rappstar to seek out maximal advantage on the bike. I think it paid off…

I don’t think it’s better than a disc wheel, in terms of performance. For folks who use a Powertap, there are no discs available. A cover is the only option.

I also like the 808 plus cover option so that I can use the plain 808 wheel for non-key races and club races, where a disc is sometimes a bit of overkill (bad style to bring a disc to a tri club sprint race, IMO). I don’t have to own two expensive rear wheels – just one expensive wheel plus a cheap wheel cover.

I think it is better – based on my own tests and the fact that the two companies who test this stuff the most (Hed/Bontrager & Zipp) are both bringing “bump disks” to market. If you read between the lines, it sounds like that’s what performed so gloriously in Zipp’s wind tunnel tests.

Do you have to cut a disc cover down to fit an 808? Seems like they’re designed to go all the way out to the rim… I want to get one but arent sure of which one to buy…

I’d be curious to hear why one even needs an 808. What advantage does the 808 with cover have over a “regular” wheel with a cover?

Ahh…I didn’t know that. I had a “hunch” it was a superior setup, but I didn’t know anybody had checked.

The guys at Wheelbuilder.com will trim one for you and put in the new mounting holes. It’s a standard CH Aero cover, custom-cut to fit an 808 or 404, as the case may be.
