Not yet, however, the RD did mention that the athletes should be receiving an email from Ironman.
As for the events leading up to the race, the RD did mention that the weather pattern shifted Thursday night and when he awoke Friday morning, he was on the phone with Ironman. I did a shakeout ride for 30 minutes on the bike path heading north to get an idea of what I was going to be dealing with on Saturday. Me and another ahtlete were pushing 260 watts and only going 15 mph heading into the headwind. There are three bridges to cross before hitting the main island, and the gusts of wind going over those was a bit nerve racking. Heading back, I averaged 23 mph just under 200 watts. My only concern going into race would be those who do not have good bike handling skills and having to pass them on the Wantagh Parkway. But the bike course is either two or three lanes wide.
I do think they made the right choice though. I drove down at about 3:30pm on Friday afternoon to drop off my timing chip. On the way back, a tree had fallen on the Wantagh Parkway blocking the right two lanes. Had this tree fallen the next day, Slowtwitch would have been wriiting a completely different story as I am almost certain an athlete would have been at minimum injured maybe even killed.
Now what Ironman does next, is to be seen. I think they give us athletes two choices, either defer to another open NA race or roll the registration to the 2027 edition. I do not think they reschedule the race in October due to the sheer logistics and scheduling.
A side note, I have competed in 70.3 Happy Valley and was registered for 70.3 Jones Beach, and I have to admit, both RDās have been active in the Facebook group and I have been impressed by both so far.
We are pleased to confirm that the team has managed to secure a new date, and the 2026 Northwell IRONMAN 70.3 New York will now take place on Saturday, October 24, 2026.
You can expect a very similar race experience based out of the same venue in Zachās Bay. The date change has meant we will move to a 3-loop bike and 3-loop run. Full details and maps will be provided in advance of race day.
We recognize that a change this close to race day impacts travel, training and personal plans, and that the new date may not work for everyone. Registered athletes therefore have the following options:
Transfer your registration to the rescheduled 2026 event on Saturday, October 24, 2026.
Defer your 2026 registration to the 2027 IRONMAN 70.3 New York, Sept 2027 (final date TBC).
Doesnāt look like it. Iām really curious how many people will end up racing and if theyāll offer the same amount of Worlds slots. Might be a good race to nab one, if they are.
I thought about deferring to the 2027 race to nab a Worlds slot, but I donāt know where worlds will be in 2028. So I am opting for a refund. I couldnāt race it anyway, if I wanted too, I had to borrow a front fork for my bike as my steer tube was cracked. And I already shipped it back to the person so they could go to Kona.
Those are really fair options for an act of God !!! Versailles 70.3 also re opened for registrations for the new date in Oct vs their original July date
I agree 100% on late October weather here. For the athletes who elect to race in October, any idea when you can commit at the last minute if you are watching long term weather forecasts?
According to a Google search from a mate, their is a cold water safety formula for air and water temps.
Adjusted Water Temperature Formula
Calculation: Add the water temperature and air temperature in Fahrenheit (Water Temp + Air Temp).
The Threshold: If the combined adjusted temperature falls below 120°F (48.9°C), the open water swim is deemed unsafe and is typically canceled or modified (often turning the event into a duathlon).
Absolute Minimums: Generally, if the water temperature itself drops below 50°F to 58°F (depending on specific race sanctioning and exact guidelines), swims face mandatory cancellation regardless of air temperature. [1, 2, 3]
Basically these tables tell you what the adjusted official water temperature is, e.g. if the measured air temperature is 50°F and the measured water temperature is 60°F, then the water temperature is officially 55°F.
Then thereās further guidance for shortening the swim:
No idea, Iāve never taken the refund. The one time I had a race canceled I just deferred to the following year. Dealing with Ironman was painless compared to Airbnb, which I had to fight tooth and nail to get my booking refunded at the time.
Average high/low on that day is 56/45. Which is more than doable. Looks like average water temps that time of year are around 60. According to that chart above, water temp 60 and air temp 46 means a canceled swim. So itās going to be close.
