One of the best lines ever written. When writing about Ted Williams’ final game, where he hit the home run in his last at bat. Williams was notorious for never tipping his cap nor taking a curtain call. The crowd clamored and chered and begged Williams to do so. Updike captured why he did not in 5 words:

Gods do not answer letters.
