Joanna Zeiger article - dizziness during the run

I was just wondering if anyone else had a similar experience to what Joanna Zeiger describes in the recent Slowtwitch article. Running used to be my strong sport, but over the past two years I’ve had increasing dizziness (only during races) on the run and sensation of “not being in my body”. It feels like oxygen deprivation, and, like Zeiger, the issue is getting worse with time. Because SO many factors could be causing this - heck, it might even be completely mental or psychosomatic - I have no idea where to begin looking for explanations or solutions.

Anyone else experience this?

It’s happened to me a couple of times running this year. I pretty much have the cause narrowed down to coffee intake in the morning. Your results may vary.

same here…the times I’ve had that “not in my body feeling” on the run have been mostly early in the morning 5am and I’ve taken the wrong shot blox (I use the black cherry w/ caffeine on mornings I don’t run…they’re okay for a swim) and the mixed berry for mornings I run. I take 2 blox, which is not a lot, but coming off of dinner at b/w 6-8 the night before, it throws me off a little. Its dark and I grab the wrong ones and lets face it, at 4:50 in the morning when I’m headed to they gym, things are not easily noticed until too late.

I can feel it coming… first I feel like my legs are just hauling, then my eyes feel wierd, and then its total outta body experience…It is a scary feeling…

I’ve really only experienced this during Ironman runs, every one to be exact. Oh, and a long training ride once when I took only water for fluids and lots of it. For me, I’ve found I’m either taking too much fluid or not enough sodium. I’ve experimented with this over the last year and have found that bumping-up my sodium seems to do the trick. We’ll see in November :).

I’ve had this happen maybe twice in 5 years (twice ever, both in the last 5 years)

Running along on a perfectly normal run, once at about 1.5 hours, once after only 20-30 minutes,
I got extremely light headed, started perspiring like I was in a sauna and in general feeling like
I was fighting malaria. Both times I went a sat down for 10 minutes or so and the
worst passed, I was able to get up and continue a a shaky jog/walk home.

I don’t remember what I had eaten on the longer one - but the shorter one was last year and i noted it
in my log. A banana at 3pm, and a Vitamin Water before the run at about 6pm…nothing unusual
and I have run with a lot worse than that in my gut

The next morning, I would be all systems go, like it never happend.

I have never had a good explanation, but it seems like some hormone/chemical trigger
might get confused and give me a double-dose of the wrong stuff (like Insulin) when I
don’t need it.

I’d love to hear any ideas about what might be going on.
