These aren’t the mi.lbs we were using earlier!
That said, I’d be willing to bet 99% of the people on here, regardless of height or weight can bench press 135 pounds 40 times.
Errr…I’m a one percenter, I guess. I don’t think I have benched that much more than 2-3 times, and that was in 1984.
Count me in as a one percenter as well. No way in hell I could bench that.

I completely agree, but in your post you commented it would be hard so was a bit perplexed which isn’t too hard for me to be in that state of mind. ![]()
135 x 40 times? 99% of the people on here could do that? Not a chance.
Oops, I meant CAN’T!!!
I don’t know if there is a player in the NFL or college that weighs 270 and can run a 4.5. You need to understand the difference between 4.50 and 4.75. In slowtwitch terms it is the equivalent of a 2:20 marathon and a 2:50 marathon.
BTW - Tomlinson runs about a 4.45 at 221 lbs.
How bout 265? Jevon Kearse ran a 4.43 and he’s 265.

This is an interesting post on an endurance sports website.
I played linebacker in the Pac 10 in from 86 to 90, and I did not use any drugs other than asprine (A pain killer). Although there are many days when I wonder what could have been.
First, 4.5 for 270lbs = freak, but does not equal a good football player but it helps if you have talent. We had a guy on our team who started 4 year as an offensive lineman, who could not bench 250lbs and smoked pot every night. But he could play alot better than guys who benched 400, squated 600 and ran a sub 5.0 40. (5.0 is very fast for an Offensive Lineman)
Second. Guys in the league (and all high levels of sport) use drugs to play. Steroids, growth hormones (GH), and painkillers. It is fact of life. However, not everyone uses the illegal drugs, I would guess not even a very high percentage do 15 to 20%. The reason being steroids and GH make your muscles stronger than your joints can take. Thus the body is unstable, and gets injured. Most of the guys that I knew who took steroids were also VERY fragile.
Third in my opinion. Pain killers, Steriods, GH are all performance enhancing drugs. No pain killers do not make you faster, but they do allow you to play when you otherwise should be flat on your back in bed. If you ban 1 ban them all.
Fourth and most important, Just because you juice does not mean that you can play! I knew guys who were juiced to the gills, but could not play a lick. I am sure in all sports you will have guys (gals) using every drug known, but they cannot compete with more talented athletes. The only time the drugs are a factor are with guys who have talent, workout very hard, but need that extra 2%.
However at the pro or major amature level 2% is the difference between 9 to 5, and the cover of a Wheaties box.
In many ways sports medicine, does for human health what auto racing does for the car industry. There are a lot of people who’s quality of life is better, because of technology that has tricked down to the average person.
