Jets fans are jackasses

Chad Pennington leaves the field injured because a his ankle/knee got rolled on by another player, and the Meadowlands erupts in cheers as the backup QB comes onto the field. It was as if they were happy he was leaving the field.

A couple drives later a gimped and limping Pennington comes back on the field and leads the drive to a TD. How’s that for sticking it to the fans?

What do you expect, they are from New York?

Announcers said they might have been cheering b/c Pennington was trying to walk off the field (actually one-legged hopped), rather than be led off.

I don’t really agree with that. I think they were cheering that Pennington was coming out (for whatever reason). Football fans are the most fickle of all fans. Penington could throw 3 TDs next week and return to mayor of NY status.

It’s ridiculous. Football is, by far, the worst when it comes to fans. If you play a year of high-school foootball you are now qualified to be an expert in analysis or forever boast about how tough you’d be if you were in the NFL, etc.

I was watching the game when it happened, and you could hear the fan noise live. Pennington was off the field, then about 5-10 seconds later the backup comes in and you could hear the fans erupt. It was pretty obvious in my opinion. There was little noise when he was hobbling around trying to walk it off, as if the fans were in shock over the sight of him repeatedly falling down.

That was pretty bad on the fans part, gutsy of him though to come back in and lead a TD drive on one leg.

Pats offense looked unbelievable, especially their offensive line. I don’t think Brady ever got touched once or even pressured, seemed like he had all the time in the world to throw the ball.

Yea, the offense was pretty spectacular. The guy on TV said Brady looked like a statue in the pocket because he didn’t have to move an inch to buy time.

the way i look at it, when you’re in a crowd of fans, you’ve got the vocabulary of a dog - you’ve got around a dozen things to say but only 3 or 4 words. Is he barking cause he’s hungry? Cause he needs a walk? Bored? It’s like that with fans - you can cheer, you can boo, but you can’t say why you’re doing it.

I like Zambrano’s response to being boo’d after losing 5 consecutive games after signing his $90M+ contract. He pointed to his ear and nodded as if saying “I hear ya, I understand your frustration” (as if he was intentionally trying to lose 5 straight games). I’m not big on boo’ing, but it is the only way fans can express what they’re feeling. There’s also the “mob mentality” where people will just do what others are doing, and there’s also the “safety in numbers” or “safety from a distance”. We’ve all seen fans that have said/gestured things to players from the safety of the seats that they would never say/do if the player were standing right here.

The truth is J-E-T-S fans have continually over-estimated Pennington’s ability-talent-value. The fans are the ones that build em up and then tear em down.

I’ve seen that safety from a distance behavior from the fans towards Barry Bonds. Regardless of what you think of him personally or what you believe is the truth about his steroid use, the guy is 6’2" and at least 230 lbs of pretty much muscle. Some of the guys that boo him are lucky they aren’t doing it in a dark alley by themselves where no one could see Barry beat the pulp out of them.

Hey, give Philly fans their due, they are pretty big scumbags themselves. (The Eagles are the only NFL games I watch, but the fans are horrible). I hate the Cowboys as much as anyone but when Micheal Irving got injured at Philly with a potentially life threating neck injury (at least it looked that way in slow mo) I couldn’t believe people cheered. Plus the whole throwing snowballs at Santa episode.

I can’t stand Pennington, never have, never will. I am a huge Jets fan. The man can’t stay healthy, can’t throw the ball with any zip on it before or after his various shoulder injuries. He can’t be counted on to stay healthy and fans just want a QB that can throw with some authority. Even some members of the team were talking in the press during the preseason that they would like to see more of clemens.

J-E-T-S
Suck! Suck! Suck! Suck!

I actually think it’s a lot of Jersey trash, never know.

Watching as a Pats fan, I was shocked at the lack of class bythe Jets fans. Pennington was playing decent, getting terrible protection (Pats best DL was not even playing) and they cheer when he gets hurt. I hope Mangini or someone else tees off to the media about what a bunch of douchebags the NY fans are.

… and take pride in it.

On the toher hand, Philly baseball fans can be both the best and worst of fans. They boo’d Mike Schmidt at the tail of his career, and then essentially boo Scott Rolen (All-Star and Gold Glove) out of town. But, yet are very creative in their support of Randy Wolf (the Wolf Pack), Vicente Padilla (The Padilla Floatilla), and the wearing of superhero costumes when Tom “Flash” Gordon would pitch.

Their love/hate for a player seems to change with the wind.

They’re the same fans that boo’d the drafting of McNabb.

A Philly fan on this site (can’t remember who) shed some light on it by revealing that a book about the 80 world series team was titled “You Can’t Lose Them All” … Classic.

as a philly fan, i’d gladly take excessive emotion over lack of emotion.
you’re right, of course, about the irvin injury.
but the santa thing was, from what i can tell, all in good fun - and DECADES ago. the vet was built in the early 70s, snowballs at santa was before that. and apparently it was a very drunk santa who’s still on the radio here from time to time to talk about it. he holds no grudge.

Hey, I resemble that remark ! I grew up in NY, and was fortunate enough to go to a few Jets and Giants games. The media and fans were merciless !

Assume that the giants lost…the NY Post would have a headline on the sports pages saying “Simms sucked, Giants lose.” The fans would repeat that line to Simms personally at the next game.

In contrast, I went to college and med school in Virginia. Redskins fans and media, when confronted with a loss by the Redskins as a result of poor play by their quarterback, would have as the dominant theme “Redskins lose secondary to blatant cheating by the Giants/Eagles/Cowboys and refs. Quarterback of the Redskins suffers from excruciating bruise on pinky”. Cracked me up…
