Jesus camp

I don’t even know where or how to start… I just watched “Jesus Camp” which is a movie/documentary about Christianity in the United States. It is scary; very scary!!! and I honestly think that I am falling short when I say that it’s made me sick and I will probably have nightmares for a while. I have cried watching this movie just thinking on the lives of those innocent kids that do not know anything but what their parents tell them.
I don’t know what else to say… rent it if you haven’t seen it yet.

Dude, be prepared for a lambasting! Jesus Camp’s parents post here (I’ve been arguing in the “faith” thread for 2-3 days now)!

PS- thanks for dropping off my shoes- I’m a dumbass! My wife didn’t hear the doorbell; your boy will outgrow what we got him before long…

Heard of it. Never seen it. That kind of indoctrination is very scary, though.

i thought it was a great movie. i would highly recommend it. as i say: welcome to america.

and i especially liked the part where the colorado springs priest is touching the young charistmatic christian boy and discussing “the word” (of course, all the while, the priest is behind the scenes having sex with a male prostitute and taking a little meth, but of course the folks in the film don’t know about that yet).

don’t you just love the irony in christian documentaries (and in most religious folks, especially christian, muslim, and hindu) …

I tried to convert tibbs and I failed. I’m in the mood for a good cry so thanks for the rec.

I saw it last year. Interesting and disturbing. I was amazed by the little boy with the mullet/rat-tail, Levi, I think his name was. He was so comfortable and natural at preaching, it was disconcerting. It will be interesting to see if he becomes a future Ted Haggard.

I saw it and wasn’t nearly as disturbed as I had expected.

I guess I was very disturbed because I am a brand new father. My son was just born a month ago and since then I am having a hard time watching anything on tv that deals with kids; specially if they have no control over anything.

now a couple of questions for you guys: is it for real? do you know people like that? is there anybody in the forum with such believes? I am so amazed because in my country, Spain, almost everybody (98% of the population) is Catholic but only a very small percentage practices on a daily basis… I am still speechless

Yes it is real. I work with people like this everyday. Now a lot of the Christians on here will say it is a small minority of Christians but it’s a large enough segment be make a lot of noise and effect a lot of people.

Its funny…you can do a documentry on any subject and make it appear whatever way you want. Do one on Mormanism…put a spin on it. How about mexicans crossing the border. Theres alot of different spins you can put on that too. Bottom line is there are some kooks in this world but no more kooky than you and I. I’ll bet some people think that not rasising you kid in this way is doing them harm. Some may say the way you raise your kid is wrong. Everyone has their own view point and it doesn’t make anyones wrong, just different.

disclaimer; I do not attend church or am not a religious zelot in any way, shape or form. I do beleive in GOD and not in evolution but that is my right as an American to do so.

This seems to be the way things are headed. I also grew up in an area that was heavily catholic and we didn’t act this way. I now live in an area full of the born again types and I simply try and ignore them. I don’t think they’ll go away, though…

A couple of points about the movie:

MOST Christians that I am aware of are not nearly as nutty as the people in that church. However, I have heard numbers as high as 25% of Americans being reported as evangelical types. In some areas it is an issue, but by and large, most of the country the Christians pretty much just go to church on Sundays, say a belssing before dinner, and pretty much mind their own business.

Yes, the documentary is real. I thought, of any documentary I’ve seen, that this was actually shot in the most objective and unbiased fashion. I would expect that the people of that church would probably approve of the job they did. Compare that to, say, a Michael Moore film where its clear that he had a point to make.

The brand of Christianity was Pentacostal. More specifically it was a mid western style Pentacostal. I can’t speak with any authority of how many there are that are similar to them, but that you’d be hard pressed to find a church like that, say, in a black southern area or in California, or in a North eastern city…just as some examples.

Also keep in mind that they probably aren’t that common even in their area as evidenced by the one girl who says she feels she has to defend her beliefs to the kids in her school.

Yes, very freaky. I almost cried a couple of times watching them brainwash those poor kids. And yes, “brainwash” is a very accurate term. They were using very specific brainwashing techniques.

Truth be told, the documentarians had said that their opinion of the people in the church was that they were very very nice people.

You appear to be the most persecuted person on earth. It seems there are hundreds, if not thousands of people whose sole purpose in life is to make your life miserable.

Honestly, I don’t think I have ever heard of anyone more persecuted than you. It’s almost as if everyone in your immediate influence is out to get you.

You should find a home near Barry or other like minded atheists and you can all live together in harmony.

That sounds almost, dare I say, like heaven.

Quite a leap from here: Yes it is real. I work with people like this everyday.

Quite a leap

My comment is based on the other thread about Faith and Tibbs posts over the years complaining about Christians. I have never heard anyone, in my entire life, who has had to put up with so many people trying to change his belief system.

I just think he needs to find a new place or find a new peer group.

First I am the sexiest person on Earth. Second I am down loading some sea shanties and look forward to listening to them. That out of the way You can easily pick out just my problems with Christians and act like that is the only thing going on with my life and run with it. The fact are as they are. I live in a small Texas town where the godless are not welcome. I have three Reverends who work with me and they are leaders of churches in the area. It might not be that way in your home town and it isn’t the way your roll but come visit sometime and I can introduce you to everyone.

Casey, but then he’d have to deal with you when I invite you to my house for dinner. Any time you are in town you are more than welcome.

First I am the sexiest person on Earth.

No argument there.

If people are as you describe, it just gives me another reason not to come to Texas.

I thought you would get a kick out of me grouping the atheists together.

I am not sure if coming to a dinner with you and Tibbs would be a good idea. I would pray to bless the meal, and everyone would get bent out of shape.

Nah…we’d just make faces at you while your eyes were closed.
