Jeopardy

Anybody going to watch tonight?

Yes, my wife and I watch most episodes anyway and have been religiously following while James has been on. Never seen anything like this, including Ken Jennings - who was incredible but in a much less dominant manner.

And fuck Deadspin. That is all.

Why? Are you a contestant tonight?

After reading the leak, I might remember to watch…

Why wait, you can watch it now!

Jeopardy has been our favorite show for years, but now I’m getting so fed up of James that I’m watching it less. I just want to see him get knocked over.

My wife is traveling home from Cleveland as I type, and she texted me to tape it tonight. She said she saw something that indicated tonight was a much watch. I am trying to stay away from spoilers, but either he loses, he surpasses the record, or he french-kisses Alex. Any one of those will make for great TV!

And actually, I didn’t do a good job from staying away from spoilers.

The King is dead. But i guess the over $2 million will help.

There always has to be one person who spoil’s it. (Yes my post is late) but this comment was up before it aired in most the country. All previous posters managed to not spoil it.

Except he lost something like 47% of that to taxes, including over 13% to the state of California.

He threw the game, and Jeopardy knew it was coming.
-stopped answers even the easy questions
-no discussion with Alex during contestant interviews
-terrible wager on final Jeopardy
-no congratulations on his streak
A very disappointing way to end an amazing run. Frees up 30 mins of my evenings now though

**-terrible wager on final Jeopardy **

Actually, based on the fact he was behind going into Final Jeopardy, he bet the right amount to make sure the guy in 3rd couldn’t catch him if both himself and the leader were wrong and the leader bet big.

Yep, it was the only smart bet. So he showed again, that he’s smarter than most people (as many criticized the bet).

I’m just trying to figure out how much time they have to do the math when they make that final wager. I think I’d freeze up and add things up incorrectly.

It was a great run. I think the other players (given who could have been exposed to his game methods, what with taping schedules and all) finally caught on to his aggressive game play.

And, yes, I thought he threw it at first, too, but I see the explanation on the math and it (sortof) makes sense.

I love the fact tbat she wrote her Masters thesis on Jeopardy. The ideal person to knock that guy off his pedestal.

Yeah, that’s really cool. I have a hunch that one of the topics addressed in her thesis is how to study and prepare for Jeopardy. And she’s a librarian with access to a lot of study material. Awesome.

My favorite part of the episode, when she got the daily double and sat there thinking, you could see her thinking If I am going to win I need to go for it, but it was a big risk… she did it and it paid off.

I think I read, this episode was taped in March, and his first win was not till April, so the contestants still had not seen him play.

From The Washington Post:
“Using thousands of clues scraped from the show’s archive, she painstakingly analyzed whether a computer could correctly guess a trivia question’s difficulty level based on factors like its length or wording. (The answer was that certain characteristics, such as the number of noun phrases, were indeed giveaways.)”

She also practiced a lot at home, from which shoes were the most comfortable, to clicking the buzzer. She was the very definition that prepared!
