Attorney Patricia Carroll stated that “if we settle, you will never hear from my client or me again — in the press or anywhere.”
Cornwell also says Carroll claimed her client’s sexual encounter had to be rape, because she would never sleep with a “black boy.” Fact is … the alleged victim’s boyfriend at the time was black. The criminal case fell apart, partly because the alleged victim had semen from 2 different men on her shorts.

Having a really hard time seeing how (even if true) this is at all relevant. Winston was first accused in January '13, when neither the victim nor 99.9% of the country had a clue who Jameis Winston was. It’s about money now, but there is no logical way to conclude it was when he was first accused and it is hard for FSU and TPD to claim that they handled it correctly regardless of whether a rape took place or not. Sounds to me like the lawyer is throwing crap against the wall to see what sticks, and the girl is going to get paid anyways.
OK, so if he wern’t an ass who has continued to make trouble, it would have been worth $7 mil. He might have yelled himself out of the NFL this spring, I’m pretty sure even flameout QBs make more than $7M in their career. Ryan Leaf probably did. Jamarcus definitely did.
This is the problem I have with the way the NFL is handling these cases as of late. They are suspending guys who have only been accused and have not been found guilty of anything. They are suspended indefinitely “as they go through the legal process”. So guilty until proven innocent in the NFL.
Problem is it takes forever to go through the legal process on a case like this, and when you play a sport that only has a 16 week season that presents a huge problem.
So if I am a woman that lacks moral fiber and I happened to have a previous relationship with an NFL player, all I have to do is call that player up and say pay me $5m or I will accuse you of abuse. We both know it will take 6 months before you are acquitted so would you rather pay me $5m and play this season or would you rather be suspended without pay for the entire 2014-2015 NFL season?
Not excusing anyone who has been found guilty or has admitted to crimes of abuse. But the precedent the NFL sets by suspending players indefinitely while they go through the process is a dangerous one and goes against the central tenant of our legal system “innocent until proven guilty”.

I think the guys in the news recently have been suspended with pay.
Those poor NFL players are all still getting paid while suspended. Pretty nice gig if you ask me. Pay me to not beat the shit out of my body. By the way extortion is a criminal offense so before we start suggesting that women can simply do this, we have to assume that the women are willing to committ a criminal act of their own. This did not work out so well for the woman who accused Rick Pitino of rape.
As it relates to this case, if this was pure blackmail I cannot imagine it would have taken nearly 2 years for us to hear about this. I suspect representatives of Winston’s team politely suggested a settlement and the victim responded with a ridiculously high number knowing that Winston would not be able to pay. Asking for $7MM may have been more of a “fuck you I want justice”. Remember this occurred before Winston even threw a pass at FSU and its my understanding she reported it immediately.
Now Winston has become successful, won a Heisman, is a sure fire top 10 draft pick and his attorney can paint this $7MM request in a different light. Doesn’t pass this sniff test to me and he and his team of lawyers might be even bigger pieces of shit for taking it this direction.

The “event” happened in December '12 and she reported it that night and went through the process (including being subjected to a rape kit). Winston was identified as **the **suspect by the accuser in January '13. She claimed not to know who he was at the time and there is no evidence to suggest she did. At the time Winston was a longshot to be FSU’s starter (it was expected to be Jacob Coker) let alone the next Heisman winner. Nothing whatsoever to suggest that the accusations were made for $.
Even if it is true (which, I agree, doesn’t pass the smell test), I am failing to see how it is at all relevant to the current Title IX issue or the civil case. The only thing Winston’s lawyer gains from this accusation is further smearing this girl’s reputation, it has nothing to do with whether or not FSU and the TPD screwed up the investigation.
The players are being suspended by their respective team’s for conduct detrimental to the team. If and when they are found guilty there will be punishment from the league.
He might not have been nationally known, but I went to FSU and people close to the situation, (including probably that girl and her attorney) knew this guy would be looking at a $40 million draft day in the next couple of years.
Im sure they thought he would want to keep this out of the news in exchange for a chunk of his soon to be 1st round draft pick contract.
