There definitely are worst places to grow up than Dee Why-Manly !

Apparently there have been 30 post race 12min-penalties. Looks like it wasn’t totally obvious to everyone that, where and when the penalty would be.
There was a big sign (1x0.5m) and two green tents with three race marshals. The athletes passed there 4 times. And when Jalabert passed there weren’t that many athletes on the course.

Some athletes asked the volunteers when they left the ramp (100m before the box) where the penalty box was. If you didn’t find it in your first lap you should ask the volunteers.
Probably the athletes who missed the box didn’t attend the race meeting where it was mentioned for sure.

What about his pacing? Not a great swim but for somebody who did not know how to swim 6 month ago, bravo. Then though he’s got the third overal time on the bike, I bet he did not push too hard but it payed a lot on the run with a fast 3:11:38. He probably could have gone for broke and get the fastest bike time, but instead managed his effort. A lesson for a lot of would-like-to-be-fast-riders…

Yes, definitely a well managed racing effort in all three events. I refered to his below par swim only in comparison to Ironman standards for a FOP finisher, and to stress the fact that he had to pass many people on the bike with a big speed differential, maybe leading (how would I know for sure) to his crossing the line penalty. Never would imply that it was a bad effort on his part, on the contrary.

No problem, I never understood your comment this way! He is the first to acknowledge that his swim IS below par compared to the rest of his performance. He also has been used to race as a pro on closed roads, crossing any line he fancied, so it must be hard to change old habits. Still the rule is the rule, it’s there for a dual purpose: fairness and safety. Maybe he should have had a big swiss bell or a fireman siren on his bike! Something like ‘On your left, watch out, Jaja coming!!!’
By the way, in the interview he definitely mentions his intention to go to hawaii. He will have a wild card. They already gave him a white swim cap (everbody else had a yellow) to make journalists’ job easier.

No wild card. He earned a slot in his AG. But unlike all other AGer he had not to ‘pick up’ the slot himself. He already left Zürich om Monday.
