Laurent Jalabert finished in a very respectable 9.12 (plus 12 minute penalty for crossing a line, so in the end 9.24). He had the third fastest bike split, behind the two best overall (Schildknecht and Hecht). He had to pass about 600 athletes on the bike.

Didn’t stay to pick his qualif for Hawaii, so probably won’t be there.

His splits :
Swim in 1.16.27
Bike in 4.39.16
Run in 3.11.38

why 12 mins. penalty? it’s six per line crossing, second one is DQ.

Don’t know. Been wondering the same.

Is it double of the time if you don’t stop a the penalty box?
The time in the penalty box is just added to your marathon time (it was after 500m on the run).

He was probably flying past guys so fast on the bike that he had to swing wide enough to pass the ‘two-a-breast’ formation. He had a great race!

That’s what I pictured too. Coming so far behind with the sub-par (for an Ironman) swim that he had, there must have been a tremendous speed differential between him and most other cylcists he passed in the first loop (60kms). It may have had the choice many times of either crash into a logjam of cyclists (or come to a virtual stop) or cross the line and risk the penalty. Rules are rules but I can’t say I really blame him as I don’t think this is the more dangerous option of the two.

i totally agree. draftbusters should rather be busy busting cheaters than some middle line crossing. i heard that there was enough work out there (again…).

Those MOP guys must have been wondering what the hell was going on when they saw a rocket on a bike passing by them creating a mini tornado!!!

Fred.

I disagree, totally. Drafting gets you a little advantage. Crossing the line gets you dead.

But getting dead is your own problem and your own risk that you took.

Allowing people to get themselves dead also allows Darwin to do his good work

=)

A reasonable point. I still disagree, though.

“But getting dead is your own problem and your own risk that you took.”

This is a popular, but highly erroneous thought. When you die, you affect FAR more than yourself. (1) there’s your family to consider. (2) There’s the mental anguish of the people AT the race to consider (both competetors and race crew). (3) There’s the efforts of emergency crews to consider. (4) There’s the effect to every one else in the way of increased insurance costs because of you now contributing to a higher mortality rate.

“Allowing people to get themselves dead also allows Darwin to do his good work”

Whether you’re putting this out here as a joke or not, it’s pretty callous, and far from funny.

WOW!!! SEHR KUHL!

Did anybody know Jalabert was racing!!! Was it publicized??? The tri media sure missed the boat on this!

There was an interview of him in most swiss newspapers the day before the Ironman, and it had been reported that he would participate when he made his decision at the end of last year. But only in Switzerland and France I guess.

I think it had been mentioned (maybe even by myself) on Slowtwitch some time ago.

Too bad he won’t be able to go to Hawaii (unless WTC decide otherwise).

He had a plane to take a right after the Ironman and had announced that the week before. WTC offered him a wild card for Hawaii even before the race. Placing 22nd overall, he merits to go there even without a wild card.

There is a short interview of him at IM Switzerland and how he learned to swim in the last 6 months from french TV. (In french, of course)

Besides that, he doesn’t plan on a second career. It’s only for fun and he states he doesn’t want to prove anything, he feels like a youngster when he started cycling. He want’s to discover other events such as the “Marathon des Sables” in the Sahara and do some long trail runs
Of course he does have time to train, so he admits that he trained some weeks 20 to 25 hours. He’ll be doing his Consultant job for French TV in the Tour de France comming up soon.

Stephane

Thanks for the link of the interview Stephane, I happen to be able to understand a bit of french :-).

Where do you live ? France, Switzerland ?

Cheers,
Laurent

Hi Laurent,

I live in France but work in Switzerland (Basel).

Steph

You should say: “Crossing the line MAY get you dead.”
That’s a small risk, if you are a reasonably bright person.

Felix

That obviously exactly happened.

Apparently there have been 30 post race 12min-penalties. Looks like it wasn’t totally obvious to everyone that, where and when the penalty would be.

I live on the Riviera Vaudoise (Vevey-Montreux).

Any ties to Australia (i.e your forum name) ?
