I haven’t listened to Triathlon Mockery…but I have to say this again, Joe did Tom dirty. But what’s worse is someone else welcomed them onto his large platform. Like maybe you should have invited Tom instead. But we know how insular triathlon is and how people just want to be friends with everyone.
On the last podcast they just touch on “should we talk about the back and forth between Jan and Martin ?” and then they don’t
. Does anyone have any info about that ? Was it on social media (I am not a big follower) or on the finish line in Dubai when Jan went down ?
Read the comments here.
In short: Marten threw a tantrum about having done too many laps, Jan schooled him replying it’s not hard to count to eight.
Marten’s attitude, similar to many on this forum, was also “T100 you made a mistake, you betrayed me, I am done with you” (he has since posted again, tempering his initial takes). Like IM or Challenge never shat the bed themselves. Like T100 has not injected 100s of thousands of $ in the sport, forced IM to get better, produced a number of fantastic broadcasts.
It was one of the few valid points Kelly brought up in the last episode: it seems so many people just want to see T100 fail. The IM cult is a pretty strong one.
I agree the “I’m done with you sentiment” is overblown and this is not the end of the T100. They made a lot of great adjustments for next year and if they schedule it right most everyone will forget about this race.
But those that are saying this weekend wasn’t an absolute fuck-up are delusional. The lap issue is one of those things that can happens but how they respond to it is what shapes the narrative. They responded incredibly poorly on 2 folds. The started off by blasted it all over their own socials and then they followed it up by fumbling the resolution. All that said, I still think the races next year for the most part will be great.
Yeah,MVR is very close to biting the hand that feeds him.Saying that they should take the “Professional” out of the PTO would have me say. “No soup for you in 2026 Martin, enjoy the IM Pro series”
Thanks for the link. Seems a petty comment from Jan, but at least he says it like he thinks it. I liked the reply “we can learn to count together with T100” and could have added “and the commentators”…
Quite sensible takes from everyone at Triathlon Hour regarding the fiasco I found (well, except from Greg who is always black/white on issues)
Honest Q: whos going to show up? 2024 contracts were paid way late. Schedules changed mid season 2025. Now 4 races are in middle east which for many is a journey. Projected series key races comes after IM WC races which for many is hard slog. And pros do not know if rules ever enforced (Jan swimskin in Milwaukee, Hayden shoes, lap counts)
I mean i hope its successful & I hope top pros come to Vancouver but……
Pros don’t make enough to skip them all. I do think some of the races will be challenged. LLV if the date hold could be a struggle with it’s proximity to Kona. It all really depends on when the races get scheduled, that’s the major challenge for them for 2026. They have to be smart to not create major conflicts with Ironman, Roth and WTCS as the Olympic cycle kicks back in gear next year.
Ultimately - at $50000 per race, the T100 races are $22k more than the Pro Series IMs and the pro series 70.3s are literally $7500 for first that I can see. That’s a TON of money - people will show up for the races. The money in the end of season has been so much more with T100 too - not at the top but go beyond top 3 and it’s not much in the Pro Series to the T100 - 10th is $10k v $40k I think. But more money in the races, I believe will ensure that even more athletes show up. I think the upfront money and lower race winnings (still good but…) actually deincentivized a lot of athletes this year…
If your MVR or other guys that can be top 7 in t100 but know they can handle full Ironman and get top points in Ironman pro series and finish top 3. They are likely not interested anymore in t100.
Guys like Mika and a few that aren’t sure of theirs ability in the full Ironman and impact on the body will for sure stay for the t100 knowing what they get while the money is there.
Each has to really race their strength and strategize what is best for paid days while the money is high.
If the Middle East didn’t kick in money this would be over this year I think . And once the t100 ends Ironman might not take the money down but more fast guys are fighting for the same money . Which makes it harder to win and get pro series points .
I agree with your deductions/predictions: the best will show up.
The race prize money is very good: $275k (single sex) per race, not 500.
Athletes at the top end will have to make a judgement wrt needing a 70.3 score for the IMPS v way better race prize money and reaching right down to #20. The Tour standings money is smaller beer and only for those who race at least 3 plus GF in December.
My interpolation from the info shared publicly offers this comparison (IMPS 70.3 eg Geelong, Oceanside):
| Pos’n | Race 2026 | 70.3 |
|---|---|---|
| Total | 275000 | 25000 |
| 1 | 50000 | 7500 |
| 2 | 40000 | 5000 |
| 3 | 30000 | 3750 |
| 4 | 20000 | 3000 |
| 5 | 16000 | 2000 |
| 6 | 14000 | 1500 |
| 7 | 13000 | 1250 |
| 8 | 12000 | 1000 |
| 9 | 11000 | |
| 10 | 10000 | |
| 11 | 9000 | |
| 12 | 8000 | |
| 13 | 7000 | |
| 14 | 6500 | |
| 15 | 6000 | |
| 16 | 5500 | |
| 17 | 5000 | |
| 18 | 4500 | |
| 19 | 4000 | |
| 20 | 3500 |
I was just talking about $50k for first, but you putting that out there is amazing - 12th place gets better money than 1st in a pro series race. AND, the Pro series is comparable for the first couple places but goes down so fast. 10th is hardly covering costs to 3 races on the cheap. They will show up, anyone saying the best will ignore the T100 is really getting petty on things IMO. The money is…too good. And now they are incentivized to race.
Yeah I think the only real question is when do the federations start blocking short course athletes from competing in the T100 as we get closer to the Olympics. Those athletes don’t have full autonomy on what races they can do so we may see some of the short course participation dwindle as we get nearer to LA.
The athletes will be there even more likely than the last 2 yrs when they were paid contracts prior and didnt need to compete in the full series anyway. I still think they should open it up to 30 athletes though.
Some nice sums out there. If I was a pro these 4+GF T100 races would be circled in. Especially as such a payday may already change in 2027… again. Who knows how long that money pot is still available to them.
I wonder if the Norwegians planning for an early trip to NZ/AUS to handle qualification for IM and 70.3 worlds early is motivated by having maximum flexibility in the main part of the season and be able to include some T100s too. At least one can hope.
Yes please! KB to turn his inside out while Hayden is in zone 2 lol jk
Back on topic of what was said on the podcast. I came up with a dad joke (I’m a dad).
What does Challenge Canberra have to do with a shitzu?
Neither is a big race!
On the “All in Triathlon” podcast, KB was a guest and he said he wasn’t planning to do T100, even one race. Early seasons Ironman then full focus IM championships. Although he didn’t completely shut the door on T100, just said no plans to do it if I recall correctly. Unfortunately I must say, if he participated, that would raise a lot the attention. I have a feeling the norwegians know their worth and choose carefully where they appear. ie they hinted at a new conflict with their federation over wanting to participate in a World Cup but ultimately “couldn’t do it” without much explanation.
