this am and get antibiotics for my sore throat and chest congestion…i just began my taper and my rhr is 53 instead of 43bpm… or should i just let it run its course…ive never used antibitics but im desperate and worn out from mondays 7 hr brick…thats probably why i just got what i got…tia
If it’s viral (90 percent chance it is), antibiotics won’t help and you may discover they cause you some gastro problems or worse (allergic response).
Your doc will likely tell you to drink lots of fluids and rest. So your taper won’t be perfect but if you play this right, you’ll show up that Sunday on the mend and ready to give it a fair shot.
If it was me, I would go. It can’t hurt. You have already committed a lot of effort to training. You should be able to get rid of it in a week or so, just watch your heart rate during training. If it is getting higher than normal, you are better off not doing anything at all.

it can’t hurt to get unnecessary antibiotics? ever heard of resistance? or if you’re not in a big picture frame of mind, some potential negative side effects on performance?
Let it run it’s course. When you are on antibiotics, the ‘healthy’ bacteria in your gut start converting carbohydrates to alcohol. Yes Johnny, those little critters eat carbs and shit alcohol; inside your stomach. The result is serious fatigue because you can no longer process the carbs for energy. For all effective purposes you are training as if you were drunk…without the buzz.
How long have you been feeling run down and what part of the country are you from?
I’m from NJ and have had a sore throat and cough (chest congestion) which has basically kept me up for a week straight. It’s absolutely crazy. I’ve been hitting all of my workouts except my swims, but just wondering if this bug is a localized thing.

Ding ding ding - we have a winner. People think of antibiotics as they do aspirin - antibiotics are some strong shit. It can take several days for your body to readjust after stopping antibiotic intake. I can barely run around the block when I’m on those damn things. Sometimes they are necessary, but in your case you should let your body take care of it. You are tapering anyway, so it’s a good chance for your body to strengthen in time for the race.
If it were me, I would go to the doctor to at least get checked for strep throat with a rapid strep test. If you have strep, you really want to get the antibiotics, and you want to start them now.
If you have a virus, you really don’t want to take antibiotics. If you do take antibiotics, hopefully you can do one of those five day treatments. You really don’t want that crap in your system as you approach the IM.
Good luck.
