Speaking as a sixers fan, I wish AI all the best. I hope he ends his career with at least one championship.
I think that this view is widely - but far from universaly - felt here in philly. The team was going nowhere, AI isn’t going to have that many good years left. Best of luck to him.
I hope that he can teach Carmelo Anthony that, while punching an opposing player is completely unacceptable, punching an opposing player and then running away is that much worse!

As one who had tickets (and used them for the few games they played) to the 1983 Sixers’ playoff games, I’m sad, too. I loved watching him play against all the big guys. That series against the Lakers w/O’Neill, a few years back, playing hurt all over, was dynamite.
The Sixers sure have had some characters: Darryl “Chocolate Thunder” Dawkins, World B. Free, Iverson, not to mention guys like Erving, Malone, Cheeks, Toney, McGinnis, etc. Ah, the good ol’ days.
One thing I never understood about AI: what was the question?
Good grief … since when did Philly fans get used to winning championships every year?
I thought being a Philly fan was all about the suffering … sort of like being a red sox fan x 4.
The 76ers weren’t going to get any better with Iverson. He’s only going to get more confrontational. He isn’t going to improve anyone else. Better to just shift the situation to another team.
I think Philly got the better end of the deal. Denver will now have two hothead ball hogs and that won’t make for good basketball. Instead of punching players on other teams, Anthony and Iverson will be punching each other. This will likely only help Denver for the 15 games Anthony is suspended, then it will cause chaos. Miller is a solid player and is not selfish so he could be a big help to Philly. No telling what those draft choices could mean in future years.
Philly got the better of the deal IMO. They got a good PG and 2 #1’s and Smith. Since they were going nowhere, made no sense keeping AI, unless they wanted to allow him to retire on his own terms a year or two too late like Mr. Favre.
And here is a blatant hijack. This still pales in comparison to John Paxson getting the following for Eddy Curry (and the now-retired Antonio Davis and the Bulls likely non-lottery #1 in 2007):
Tim Thomas (gone)
Michael Sweetney - still serviceable backup fwd
Jermaine Jackson (gone)
NY’s 2nd rounder in 2007 (deepest draft in years)
NY’s 2nd rounder in 2009 (Jeffrey Jordan (Mike’s kid from the Be Like Mike commercials) if he leaves early after his soph year) JJ’s teammate is Joe Suhey, son of bears fullback, I’ll be seeing them live when they play my alma mater this year. Little brother Marcus Jordan may have made varsity too, I’m not sure.
NY’s 1st rounder in 2006 (#2 overall, traded it for Tyrus Thomas)
NY’s 1st rounder in 2007 (deepest draft in years, possible Greg Oden #1)
Isiah Thomas, any opposing GM’s best friend.
re Jeffrey Jordan …
“Jordan, who stands 6-1, currently ranks as the ChicagoHoops.com#25-rated Class of 2007 prospect in the state of Illinois. He is at his best using his quickness and athleticism to slash to bucket where he is a solid finisher at the rim.”
Sounds like dad before dad developed a jump shot. Don’t the Bulls draft him just because? Lots o pressure though. Overcome the Bears bad juju for not drafting Jarrett Payton b4 dad’s old pal Jeff Fisher scooped him up (late or free agent).
L’il Jordan and L’il Payton would be best served NOT playing in Chicago and being able to make their own name and career. They could never live up to the pressure of the precedent that Michael and Walter set.
