So, here’s my question…if i’m committed to trying to be successful on the ITU scene and race on the world cup circuit eventually, who/what are the real deal coaches/training groups to be associated with. location doesn’t matter as i’m willing to relocate (u.s. mainly)? the only one i’m familiar with is siri lindley’s group in colorado. any thoughts on that?
I would suggest contacting Steve Kelley - I think a regional co-ordinator for USAT. Here is a link:

Siri Lindley’s group is great. Plus, it’s mostly women (many of whom might kick your ass at the start), although unfortunately many of them are taken already! Seriously, she is a great coach, and I know several people that have trained with her, all of whom have raved about her and have had great results as well. Definitely couldn’t go wrong with that group.
The other obvious choice is Brett Sutton – excaliburcoaching.com. Brett was Siri Lindley’s coach. Brett’s group, I think, splits time between Brazil and Switzerland.
Greg Welch of the Multisports.com group is another possibility, given his background in short course racing.
unfortunately i’m too old to be a junior.
siri’s group seems to be the best option…not sure if she takes “walk ons” though??
brett sutton’s reputation is a little intimidating and i couldn’t justify a move to switzerland at this point in my ‘career’
thanks for the advice
this guy is very good, and has raced on the itu circuit and has all sorts of fancy initials behind his name on sports medicine degrees.

As far as I know, Siri is costly, very costly. If you have the money, that is a good option.
Another would be to find a city with great trails and good riding, and get coached by someone with a good rep on Slowtwitch (such as Paulo).
No, I didn’t mean joining him as a Junior athlete - contact Steve to find out who the coaches are in your area that you could potentially work with. I believe he is a regional co-ordinator or whatever USAT calls them so he will know the network of coaches that exist.
(edit) Actually, best bet is to go here and find the person to talk to in your area: http://www.usatriathlon.org/MultiSport101/Regions/AthleteDevelopment.aspx

Some to think about…
Siri
Brett
Cliff English (though I don’t think he’s taking athletes)
Lance Watson
Joel Fillol (might be spelled wrong, but I don’t think he’s taking athletes)
Those are the bigger names, and they are all pretty close to the same price, which is quite expensive. There are a lot of athletes out there who have lesser known coaches, but seem to be doing quite well…might not necessarily be the coaching, but rather the talent. Siri’s group has some very good results.
i’m more interested in the combo of good coaching and training partners geared towards the same type of racing. sadly, money is an issue (my family supports my racing…just not financially).
I think that Junior Tri group is a good one of young guys and girls geared toward ITU stuff. Also, if you live in Boulder or Bend OR you can’t walk 5 feet without bumping into a triathlete.
i’m in a training mecca here in the northeast (note the sarcasm)…for now at least.
The only true US ‘group’ setting that I know of is with Siri. I know of one other coach who says he has a group, but I’ve known several of his athletes, and I would not consider them that great of a group to train with. Most of the other ‘group’ settings that I have heard of are generally associated with a training center of sorts…USAT and/or Canada (Victoria). Even then, from talking to some of the guys at the USOTC, it sounds like they don’t all necessarily swim/bike/run together. Swimming yes, but the other 2, not as much. DaveK can probably speak more to this as I think that he was part of the collegiate team at one point in time.
I’ve heard some VERY mixed things about Siri’s group…
more info??? pm if you don’t want to tell all to everyone

Steve Kelley doesn’t only coach juniors…He has coached and influenced multiple ITU athletes that have been very successful.
Hank Lange - great coach who coaches up and comming itu racers (jarrod)
and Tim Crowley - CTS coach who coaches itu guys
All good coaches in the NE area (all have coached athletes that have made usat national teams)
Hi Brandon,
Indeed I am not taking new private athletes as I am working exclusively with Triathlon Canada through 2008.
Joel Filliol
PS Close on the last name ![]()
where are lange and crowley located??
Hank is in the North East as far as I know. He was at the Westchester ITU race. I think that he might take a select few elite athletes, but my take was that he works primarily with age groupers.
